Turkish club Bursaspor have emerged as the leading contenders to sign Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho, with reports indicating the Super Eagles forward has become the club’s top attacking target ahead of the new season.
The 29-year-old striker is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe, Turkey, and South America after becoming a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Scottish champions Celtic. The Hoops opted against activating the 12-month extension clause in his deal, leaving Iheanacho free to negotiate with interested clubs.
Bursaspor Steps Up Pursuit
Bursaspor are understood to have intensified discussions over a possible move for the Nigerian striker as they seek to complete their squad before the start of the new campaign.
The Turkish side views Iheanacho’s experience at the highest level as a major asset and believes he possesses the quality to spearhead their attack. While negotiations are ongoing, no agreement has been reached, with the player still evaluating his options.
Club president Enes Çelik confirmed that signing a striker remains the club’s final priority before the squad is finalised.
“It might happen after the Bolu training camp. We won’t rush. We said let’s think about it a little more. We want to meticulously find the most suitable one among the available options. The only thing left is the striker position. We will hand over the team to our coach when we go to the Bolu training camp, except for one striker,” Çelik said.
Iheanacho Weighing His Options
The Nigerian forward is taking his time before deciding on his next destination, with interest coming from multiple leagues.
In addition to Bursaspor, other Turkish clubs are believed to be monitoring the situation, while Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama have also been linked with the former Manchester City striker.
Iheanacho is understood to be prioritising a move that guarantees regular playing time as he looks to revive his career and remain a key figure for the Super Eagles.
A Career Built on Experience
Iheanacho remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished forwards, having enjoyed a successful spell in the English Premier League with Leicester City, where he was part of the club’s historic 2015/16 Premier League title-winning squad before establishing himself as an important member of the Foxes’ attack.
He moved to Celtic in 2024 with high expectations but struggled to secure a consistent role, ultimately leaving the Scottish champions after the club decided not to extend his contract.
With years of experience in England, Scotland, and international football, the striker remains an attractive option for clubs seeking proven attacking quality.

As Bursaspor continues preparations for the new season, the club hopes to conclude its search for a striker once the Bolu training camp is completed.
