Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem says the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations represents the perfect opportunity for Nigeria to redeem itself after the painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria begins its AFCON campaign on December 21 in Morocco, aiming to clinch a fourth continental crown. But the team heads into the tournament under immense pressure, with fans still disappointed by the World Cup miss, a setback that has intensified expectations ahead of the competition.
Speaking in an interview with his club’s official website, Awaziem made it clear that he is fully focused on helping Nigeria bounce back.
“Winning the AFCON is my focus with Nigeria,” the former Boavista defender said. “I don’t like to dwell on not qualifying for the World Cup. For us, for the country, for our loved ones, we have to correct this mistake.”
Awaziem, who debuted for the Super Eagles in 2017 and has earned 35 caps, was included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for AFCON 2025. The 28-year-old has been a reliable presence at Nantes this season, featuring in all 14 matches he has been available for, a form that strengthens his chances of making the final list.
Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under the late Stephen Keshi. Despite boasting several players from Europe’s top leagues, consistency has remained a major challenge for the current squad, which has shown vulnerability even against lower-ranked opposition.
After finishing second in the 2023 tournament, the Super Eagles’ performances have dipped, further dampening public confidence. Tournament hosts Morocco enter AFCON 2025 as the clear favourites, while DR Congo, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon are also expected to be strong contenders.
For Awaziem and the Super Eagles, the mission is simple: restore pride, silence doubts, and bring the AFCON trophy back to Nigeria.
