Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has added another impressive academic achievement to his career after graduating from the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Business School with a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship.
The 29-year-old, who currently plays for Premier League side Coventry City, graduated with a Merit classification, marking his third major formal academic qualification alongside his professional football career.
Awoniyi announced the achievement on social media, sharing photographs from his graduation ceremony and expressing his pride at reaching another milestone away from the football pitch.
“Another proud moment for me off the pitch. Graduating from the PFA Business School with a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship with Merit. Still playing. Still learning. The journey continues.”
The programme, delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills required for modern sporting-director roles.
Its areas of study include football leadership, sporting-department structures, long-term club development, sports administration, executive strategy and governance.
Awoniyi completed the executive qualification while continuing to compete as a professional footballer, highlighting his commitment to developing his knowledge beyond the game.
Third Academic Qualification
The latest achievement is not Awoniyi’s first experience of combining professional football with higher education.
The Nigerian forward previously earned a Diploma in Business Administration and Marketing Management from the London School of International Business in 2020.
Two years later, in 2022, he completed a degree in Business Management at Buckinghamshire New University.
His latest postgraduate diploma therefore represents his third major formal academic achievement.
From Nottingham Forest to Coventry City
Awoniyi’s football career has taken him through several clubs in Europe before establishing himself in the Premier League.
The striker spent four seasons with Nottingham Forest, making more than 100 appearances and scoring 23 goals during his time at the club.
In the summer of 2026, he completed a permanent move to newly promoted Coventry City, beginning another chapter in his Premier League career.
Despite the demands of playing at the highest level, Awoniyi has continued to invest in his education, particularly in areas closely connected to the football industry.
Preparing for Life Beyond Football
Awoniyi’s decision to study sport directorship while still playing professionally reflects the increasing interest among footballers in preparing for careers beyond their playing days.
A qualification focused on sporting leadership, governance and club development could potentially provide a foundation for future involvement in football administration, executive management or sporting-director roles after his playing career.
For now, however, Awoniyi remains focused on his responsibilities on the pitch with Coventry City and the Super Eagles.
His latest achievement demonstrates that his ambitions extend beyond football, with the Nigerian international continuing to learn and develop while competing at the highest level.
