Nigeria international defender Ashleigh Plumptre marked her long-awaited return from injury with a goal, but her effort was not enough as Al Ittihad suffered a 2-1 defeat to Al Hilal in the Saudi Women’s Super Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
The Al Ittihad captain opened the scoring in the 45th minute, giving her side a 1-0 lead heading into the break at King Fahd Sports City in Taif.
However, Al Hilal produced a strong second-half comeback to turn the game around and secure their place in the final.
Al Bandari Mubarak restored parity for Al Hilal in the 60th minute before fellow Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala completed the comeback with the winning goal in the 72nd minute.
Oshoala’s decisive strike sent Al Hilal through to the final, where they will face Al Nassr.
Plumptre Ends Lengthy Injury Layoff With Goal
The match represented a significant milestone for Plumptre, who made her first competitive appearance since February.
The 28-year-old had been sidelined with a serious foot injury that required surgery in March, forcing her to miss the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.
Plumptre returned to full training with Al Ittihad in mid-August after completing her rehabilitation and wasted little time making an impact on her comeback.
Her goal against Al Hilal capped an emotional return to competitive football after several months on the sidelines.
The defender celebrated passionately after finding the back of the net, highlighting the significance of her comeback.

Despite primarily operating as a centre-back, Plumptre has developed an impressive goalscoring record since joining Al Ittihad.

While Plumptre’s goal gave Al Ittihad an early advantage, Oshoala had the final say as Al Hilal completed their comeback.

The defender missed Nigeria’s 2026 WAFCON campaign because of her injury, with the Super Falcons eventually exiting the competition at the quarter-final stage.

Born in Leicester, England, Plumptre switched her international allegiance to Nigeria in 2022 in recognition of her Nigerian heritage.
Since then, she has established herself as an important member of the Super Falcons, featuring at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and playing a significant role in Nigeria’s international campaigns.
At club level, she joined Al Ittihad from Leicester City in 2023 and has since become one of the prominent figures in the club’s growing women’s football project.
Although Al Ittihad were unable to reach the Super Cup final, Plumptre’s goal on her return offered a positive personal highlight and underlined the quality she can provide at both ends of the pitch.
