The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League is underway, and Nigerian football has a strong presence across some of Europe’s biggest clubs and most interesting emerging teams.
While names such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will carry much of the attention, several young Nigerian players are also preparing to experience the competition at the highest level.
With the league phase featuring 36 clubs, Nigeria has plenty of representation to follow this season. Here are nine Nigerian players who could make an impact in the Champions League.
1. Ademola Lookman – Atlético Madrid
Ademola Lookman enters the new Champions League campaign with plenty of expectations following his move to Atlético Madrid.
The Nigerian forward brings pace, direct running and the ability to play across the attack to Diego Simeone’s squad. His ability to beat defenders and create chances could make him an important option for Atlético in difficult European matches.
The Spanish side face a demanding league-phase schedule that includes Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven and Fenerbahce.
Lookman already has significant Champions League experience and will be expected to provide another attacking dimension for Atlético as they chase another deep run in the competition.
2. Victor Osimhen – Galatasaray
Victor Osimhen remains one of the biggest Nigerian names in the competition.
The Galatasaray striker is coming into another Champions League campaign as the focal point of the Turkish champions’ attack. His pace, strength, movement and finishing make him one of the forwards opponents will have to plan carefully for.
Galatasaray have been handed a difficult league-phase schedule, with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Lille, Aston Villa, Sporting CP, Feyenoord, Stuttgart and AEK Athens among their opponents.
Osimhen will miss the opening Champions League fixture against Sporting CP through injury, but his return will be a major boost for Galatasaray.
The Nigerian has also established himself as Nigeria’s leading Champions League goalscorer, with UEFA recording 16 goals in the competition as of April 2026.
3. Suleiman Sani – RB Leipzig
Suleiman Sani represents the younger generation of Nigerian players looking to make their mark in Europe.
The 19-year-old winger offers pace, direct running and the willingness to work without the ball. Those qualities could make him a useful option for RB Leipzig, particularly when the German side needs fresh attacking energy.
His Champions League education will be a serious one, with Leipzig scheduled to face the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United.
For Sani, even limited minutes against such opponents could provide valuable experience and put his name on the radar of a wider audience.
4. Prosper Obah – Shakhtar Donetsk
Prosper Obah is another Nigerian youngster with an opportunity to introduce himself to European football’s biggest audience.
The Shakhtar Donetsk attacker can operate from either flank and possesses the quick feet and creativity needed to trouble defenders in one-on-one situations.
Shakhtar will face some heavyweight opposition, including Real Madrid and Inter Milan, while also meeting Sporting CP and Fenerbahce.
Obah’s ability to carry the ball and attack spaces in transition could become particularly important when Shakhtar are forced to defend for long periods.
5. Igoh Ogbu – Slavia Prague
Igoh Ogbu gives Nigeria representation at the heart of the Slavia Prague defence.
Unlike the attacking players on this list, Ogbu’s main responsibility will be stopping some of Europe’s best forwards.
The centre-back is known for his physical strength, tackling ability and aerial presence, qualities that will be tested throughout Slavia’s campaign.
Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Aston Villa, Villarreal and Porto are among the clubs Slavia will face.
Ogbu’s performances against those opponents could be crucial to Slavia’s hopes of remaining competitive in the league phase.
6. Samuel Isife – Slavia Prague
Samuel Isife is another Nigerian defender to watch at Slavia Prague.
The full-back offers defensive energy while also having the ability to contribute when his team moves forward.
His development will be particularly interesting because Slavia have a wider Nigerian contingent, with David Moses and Mubarak Suleiman also linked with the Czech champions.
For Isife, the Champions League provides an opportunity to gain experience against some of the strongest teams in Europe and continue his development on a major stage.
7. Zaidu Sanusi – Porto
Zaidu Sanusi brings experience to Nigeria’s Champions League contingent.
The Porto left-back has already played extensively in Europe’s elite competition and offers recovery pace, stamina and defensive discipline.
Porto’s league-phase schedule includes Manchester City, Liverpool, Napoli and Real Betis, giving Sanusi several opportunities to test himself against high-level attacking players.
His involvement will depend partly on his fitness after an injury setback, but if he returns to full fitness, his experience could be valuable to Porto.
8. Moses Usor – LASK
Moses Usor arrives in the Champions League after playing a major role in LASK’s dramatic qualification.
The Nigerian forward scored during LASK’s remarkable 5-1 extra-time victory over Celtic in the play-off second leg, helping the Austrian club overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit and qualify 5-4 on aggregate.
That performance has given Usor an ideal platform to enter the league phase with confidence.
LASK will face Liverpool, Real Madrid, Sporting CP and Porto, among others, meaning the Nigerian forward will have opportunities to test his attacking ability against some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
9. Christian Nwachukwu – Sabah
Christian Nwachukwu could be one of the most intriguing Nigerian players to watch.
The 20-year-old winger has already made an impact during Sabah’s Champions League qualifying campaign, scoring in the club’s play-off victory over Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
Sabah subsequently reached the league phase for the first time in their history, giving Nwachukwu an opportunity to face some of the biggest clubs in European football.
Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Manchester United and Napoli are among Sabah’s opponents.
For a young player with direct running and one-on-one ability, those matches could provide the perfect stage to announce himself.
Osimhen and Lookman remain the headline names, but Nigeria’s Champions League representation tells a bigger story.
The presence of players such as Sani, Obah, Isife and Nwachukwu shows that a younger generation is beginning to get opportunities at the highest level of European club football.
Meanwhile, experienced players such as Sanusi and Ogbu provide a balance of youth and experience.
With the 2026/27 Champions League league phase now underway, Nigerian fans will have plenty of reasons to follow the competition closely.
