Super Eagles Slide to 31st in Live FIFA Rankings After Guinea-Bissau Defeat

4 Min Read

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped to 31st in the latest live FIFA men’s world rankings following their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The heavy loss in Bissau has seen Nigeria fall five places, with the Super Eagles now sitting on 1,568.27 points in the live ranking. The decline represents a loss of more than 21 ranking points and comes at a difficult moment for a team looking to regain consistency in the ongoing AFCON qualifying campaign.

Nigeria were beaten by Guinea-Bissau on September 29 after Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló found the net to give the hosts a memorable victory.

The result was particularly damaging because of Guinea-Bissau’s lower position in the world rankings before the fixture. The Djurtus have now moved to the top of Group L after winning both of their opening matches, while Nigeria remain on three points following their earlier 2-1 victory over Madagascar.

The latest movement has also affected Nigeria’s position within Africa.

The Super Eagles have slipped to sixth on the continent, behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire. Morocco continues to occupy the top position among African nations in the global rankings.

With the next official FIFA ranking update approaching, Nigeria faces another complication during the October international window.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Russia in an international friendly on October 6 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. However, because Russia remains suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions, the fixture is not expected to contribute ranking points.

That means Nigeria may have limited opportunities during the current window to recover the points lost against Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles could therefore remain vulnerable to further movement in the rankings if other nations around them collect points in ranking-eligible matches before the next official update on October 7.

For Nigeria, however, the bigger concern extends beyond the ranking itself.

The defeat in Bissau has placed additional pressure on the Super Eagles ahead of the next round of AFCON qualifying fixtures. After taking three points from their opening two matches, Nigeria will need a stronger response when the qualifiers resume in November, beginning with a meeting against Tanzania.

The Guinea-Bissau result has also raised questions about Nigeria’s ability to produce consistent performances against opponents they are expected to compete with for qualification.

The Super Eagles entered the current international period with higher expectations, but the three-goal defeat has left them with work to do both in the qualifying campaign and in rebuilding momentum.

For now, the FIFA ranking serves as another reminder of the consequences of the result in Bissau.

Nigeria have slipped to 31st in the world and sixth in Africa. With the next ranking update around the corner and no ranking points expected from the Russia friendly, the Super Eagles will have to wait until competitive action returns for another opportunity to reverse the slide.

When the AFCON qualifiers resume in November, the objective will be straightforward: start winning again, collect valuable points and begin climbing back up.
