New Era Begins: Maikaba Takes the Reins as Flying Eagles Launch Campaign for Continental Glory

3 Min Read

Newly appointed Flying Eagles head coach Abdul Maikaba has declared his readiness to lead Nigeria’s U-20 national team, stepping into one of the most high-pressure roles in African youth football following official ratification by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Maikaba succeeds Aliyu Zubairu after the NFF Executive Committee approved recommendations from its Technical and Development Committee. To support his vision, the NFF assembled a robust backroom staff: Ortega Deniran steps in as first assistant coach, Abdullahi Biffo takes the role of second assistant, and former international Usman Mohammed assumes duties as goalkeepers’ trainer.

Maikaba is no stranger to the demands of the national setup, having previously served as head coach of the Golden Eaglets (U-17) and as an assistant coach to Paul Aigbogun during a previous Flying Eagles cycle.

Taking to social media to address fans and outline his blueprint, Maikaba acknowledged the weight of managing the seven-time African champions.

“To lead this team is a massive responsibility and a privilege I do not take lightly,” Maikaba stated. “The challenges before us are great, but our determination is greater. The work starts immediately — nurturing Nigeria’s finest young talents, creating a winning culture, and making millions of Nigerians proud on the global stage.”

Maikaba’s honeymoon period will be short-lived. His first major test comes this July at the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Ivory Coast. The regional tournament serves as the high-stakes qualification pathway for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations—the ultimate gateway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

With zero margin for error, Maikaba has already hit the ground running, summoning a 35-man provisional squad to camp to begin rigorous tactical and physical preparations.
