Super Eagles Call Up Otomewo and Osuji As Ndidi, Victory Withdraw From Russia Friendly

4 Min Read

John Otomewo and Vince Osuji have received unexpected opportunities to impress Nigeria coach Eric Chelle after Wilfred Ndidi and Akpe Victory withdrew from the Super Eagles squad ahead of their October 6 friendly against Russia.

The late changes have opened the door for two young players hoping to establish themselves in the national team, giving them an opportunity to turn last-minute call-ups into important steps in their international careers.

Otomewo has been drafted in to replace midfielder Ndidi, while Osuji takes Victory’s place in the squad. Neither newcomer was initially expected to play a central role in Nigeria’s plans for the fixture, but their inclusion now presents an opportunity to make a strong impression on Chelle.

Otomewo Gets His Chance to Impress in Midfield

At 19, Otomewo arrives with promising experience at club level. The defensive midfielder joined French Ligue 2 side Reims from Hapoel Jerusalem in July, signing a contract that runs until 2031.

Before leaving Israel, he reportedly started more than 90 per cent of his matches for Hapoel, demonstrating his growing importance at club level. His potential has also attracted wider attention, with the CIES Football Observatory previously ranking him among the top three under-21 midfielders playing outside Europe’s five major leagues.

His call-up adds another young option to a Super Eagles midfield that includes fellow newcomers Chibuzo Nwoko, Fumen Michael, Igor George Wilfred and Popoola Abdulrasaq.

With the opportunity to train and potentially feature against Russia, Otomewo will have a chance to demonstrate his defensive awareness, composure and ability to contribute to Nigeria’s midfield structure.

Replacing an established international such as Ndidi is a significant opportunity, although the teenager will need to show that he can adapt to the demands of senior international football.

Osuji Strengthens Nigeria’s Defensive Options

Osuji, 20, also has an opportunity to make his case for a longer-term place in the squad.

The centre-back joined Norwegian club Tromsø from Belgian side Club Brugge in August and has already begun gaining experience in competitive senior football. According to the report, he has featured in the Norwegian Eliteserien and UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds this season.

He has recorded 137 minutes across three league appearances, giving him an early introduction to the demands of his new club.

Osuji’s inclusion follows Victory’s withdrawal and adds another option to a defensive group that also features Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez and Benjamin Fredrick.

Competition for places is expected to be an important part of the Russia assignment. For Osuji, the immediate challenge will be to demonstrate the concentration, positioning and decision-making required at international level.

Russia Friendly Offers More Than a One-Off Opportunity

The October 6 encounter could prove significant for both newcomers as Chelle continues to assess his options and build depth within the Super Eagles squad.

International friendlies provide coaches with opportunities to evaluate players in a different environment, particularly younger footballers who are still establishing themselves at senior level. For Otomewo and Osuji, the experience could offer valuable exposure to Nigeria’s tactical demands and the expectations that come with representing the country.

However, earning a call-up is only the first step. Their performances in training and any minutes they receive against Russia will help determine how they fit into the coach’s wider plans.

A composed display from Otomewo could strengthen Nigeria’s midfield options, while Osuji will be looking to show that he can compete for a place among the team’s central defenders.
