Italian Serie A side US Lecce are closing in on the signing of Nigerian international Philip Otele from Swiss champions FC Basel, with negotiations between both clubs progressing positively.
The 27-year-old winger is reportedly on the verge of completing the move as Lecce continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 Serie A season.
Italian transfer expert Nicolò Schira reports that Otele is “one step away” from joining the Salento-based club, with direct talks expected to continue this week as both parties work towards finalising the transfer.
Negotiations Nearing Conclusion
Otele remains under contract with Basel until June 2028, but the Swiss club are prepared to sanction his departure after Bundesliga side Hamburger SV decided against activating their purchase option following his loan spell during the second half of last season.
Basel are understood to favour a permanent transfer, while Lecce have explored a deal involving an initial loan with an option to buy. Discussions are still ongoing over the structure of the agreement, and no official bid has yet been confirmed.
Despite the remaining details, optimism is growing that an agreement can be reached in the coming days.
A Journey Across European Football
Born in Port Harcourt on April 15, 1999, Otele has built one of the more unconventional careers among Nigeria’s current internationals.
Standing at 1.85 metres, the right-footed attacker is naturally a left winger but is equally comfortable operating on the opposite flank or as a central forward.
His professional journey has taken him across several countries, beginning in England’s non-league system before earning moves to Kauno Žalgiris in Lithuania and later UTA Arad and CFR Cluj in Romania.
It was at CFR Cluj where Otele enjoyed the breakthrough season of his career, finishing as the joint top scorer in Romania’s Liga I during the 2023/24 campaign with 18 league goals.
His performances earned him moves to Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates before joining Basel, initially on loan in January 2025. The Swiss champions later completed a permanent transfer before sending him on loan to Hamburger SV in February 2026.
During his time in Germany, Otele made nine Bundesliga appearances and scored once, but Hamburg ultimately chose not to make the move permanent.
Lecce Seeking More Firepower
Lecce narrowly retained their Serie A status last season and have made improving their attacking output a priority during the summer transfer window.
Club officials reportedly believe Otele’s pace, versatility, direct running, and eye for goal make him an ideal addition to strengthen their frontline.
His ability to play across all attacking positions also offers valuable tactical flexibility for the coaching staff.
Before Lecce’s interest emerged, Otele had reportedly attracted attention from several European clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, AFC Bournemouth, Celtic, and Lazio.
Growing Role with the Super Eagles
Otele’s club progress has also been reflected on the international stage.
The winger made his Super Eagles debut earlier this year and has already earned five senior caps, establishing himself as another attacking option for Nigeria.
A move to one of Europe’s top five leagues would represent another significant milestone in his career while providing him with the platform to further strengthen his place in the national team ahead of upcoming international competitions.
With negotiations now entering their final stages, all eyes will be on whether Lecce and Basel can reach a full agreement and complete what would be another notable move for a Nigerian player in European football.
