Melville United AFC’s newest addition, Sham Sataiya Chetty, says the opportunity to return to New Zealand football with renewed experience and ambition played a major role in his decision to join the club.
The Tauranga-born defender arrives at Melville United following a spell in Portugal with Atlético Clube Marinhense, where he gained valuable exposure to European football and further developed his game as a modern full-back.
Speaking about his move, Chetty described Melville United as the right environment for the next stage of his career.
In his words, “After my experience overseas, I wanted to return to a club with strong ambitions and a competitive environment where I can continue improving,”
“Melville United stood out because of the professionalism around the team and the direction the club is heading.”
The right-back believes his time abroad has prepared him to contribute both on and off the pitch as he settles into his new surroundings.
“Playing in Portugal helped me grow a lot tactically and mentally,” he explained. The game there is very demanding, and I learned the importance of discipline, positioning, and consistency. I’m looking forward to bringing that experience into the squad and helping the team however I can.”
Chetty’s move to Europe in 2023 marked an important milestone in his development, exposing him to a different football culture and style of play.
Now back in New Zealand, the defender says his focus is firmly on continuing his progression and contributing positively at Melville United.
“My immediate goal is to work hard, earn my place, and help the club compete at the highest level, I want to keep developing as a player and bring energy, commitment, and consistency every time I step onto the pitch.”
He further said,“Representing my national team is definitely one of my biggest ambitions, every player dreams of reaching that level, and for me it’s about continuing to improve, staying focused, and taking every opportunity to grow.”
As Melville United prepares for the challenges ahead, Chetty says he is motivated by the opportunity to continue building his career while contributing to the club’s objectives. The goal is to keep progressing, help the team succeed, and continue pushing myself to the highest level possible.”
