A significant milestone in international football cooperation was reached as the Aktobe Regional Football Association of Kazakhstan and the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) commenced high-level discussions aimed at establishing a long-term strategic football development partnership between Kazakhstan and Nigeria.
The landmark engagement, facilitated by GSL Global Network, reflects a shared commitment to strengthening global football through knowledge exchange, technical collaboration, youth development, and sustainable institutional partnerships.
Leading the Kazakhstan delegation was Askhat Sagitzhanuly Kalzhanov, President of the Aktobe Regional Football Association, who travelled to Lagos for strategic meetings with Hajji Gafar Liameed, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association. Both football leaders explored practical areas of cooperation designed to create lasting value for football stakeholders in Kazakhstan and Lagos State.
The proposed partnership will focus on several key areas, including coach education, youth football development, technical exchange programmes, talent identification, club-to-club collaborations, football administration, player pathways, and international exposure opportunities for coaches, players, and technical officials.
As Nigeria’s commercial capital and one of Africa’s most vibrant football ecosystems, Lagos continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for football investment and talent development. Home to more than 2,000 football academies, 10 professional football clubs, numerous grassroots competitions, and an exceptional pool of emerging talent, Lagos provides an ideal environment for meaningful international football collaboration.
Under the leadership of Hajji Gafar Liameed, the Lagos State Football Association has continued to implement progressive initiatives that promote grassroots football, women’s football, youth competitions, coaching education, institutional capacity building, international partnerships, and sustainable football governance.
During his visit, President Kalzhanov attended the ongoing Train The Trainers coaching programme in Lagos, where experienced Serbian football instructors are delivering an intensive technical education course for local coaches. He commended the quality of the programme and praised the Lagos State Football Association for its unwavering commitment to continuous coach development and technical excellence.
According to President Kalzhanov, investing in coaches remains one of the most effective pathways to raising football standards, developing elite players, and building sustainable football structures capable of competing at the highest level.
The Kazakhstan football administrator will remain in Lagos throughout the week to observe additional football activities, tour selected football academies and professional clubs, and continue discussions with the Lagos State Football Association on implementing practical areas of cooperation.
Both football associations are optimistic that the proposed partnership will lead to structured exchange programmes for coaches, players, referees, technical experts, and administrators, while creating new opportunities for football investment, knowledge transfer, cultural exchange, and long-term international collaboration between Kazakhstan and Nigeria.
The initiative further reinforces the Lagos State Football Association’s vision of positioning Lagos as Africa’s leading hub for football excellence, innovation, talent development, and international football partnerships, while expanding opportunities for the next generation of football professionals.
