Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali enjoyed a dream return to Chippa United, helping the South African Premiership side lift the 2nd Annual Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout victory on Sunday.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper, who rejoined the Chilli Boys earlier this month following a five-month absence, played a key role throughout the competition. Nwabali kept a clean sheet during the group stage before producing another assured display in the final as Chippa United defeated Highbury FC 4-2 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
The triumph capped an impressive return for the Nigerian international and provides a major confidence boost ahead of the 2026/27 South African Premiership season.
A Fresh Start After Difficult Months
Nwabali’s return to Chippa United follows a challenging chapter in his career. The goalkeeper mutually terminated his contract with the club in February 2026 after hoping his outstanding performances for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations would earn him a move to a bigger club in Europe or elsewhere.
However, a transfer failed to materialise, leaving the experienced shot-stopper without regular competitive football for several months.
Off the pitch, Nwabali also endured heartbreaking personal losses, mourning the deaths of his grandmother, father, and mother within a short period a series of tragedies that made his time away from football even more difficult.
Chippa United Place Faith in Super Eagles Star
Recognising his quality and leadership, Chippa United officially welcomed Nwabali back in mid-July, describing his return as a significant boost for a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
The club believes the experienced goalkeeper will bring stability, organisation, and confidence to the defence as they aim for a much-improved league campaign.
Eyeing a Super Eagles Recall
For Nwabali, consistent playing time this season carries added importance. His lengthy absence from club football saw him fall out of the Super Eagles squad under head coach Eric Chelle.
A strong run of performances in the South African top flight could put him back in contention for a return to Nigeria’s national team ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
Since joining Chippa United from Katsina United in 2022, Nwabali has established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s most dependable goalkeepers. He earned widespread recognition during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his outstanding performances helped Nigeria reach the final.
