Super Eagles Lose 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau Amid Pitch Concerns

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday, with concerns over the condition of the playing surface dominating the aftermath of the match.

The encounter at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau saw Franculino Djú open the scoring in the 15th minute before Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage after the break. Álvaro Djaló completed the victory in stoppage time.

The defeat leaves Nigeria on three points from two Group L matches, three points behind Guinea-Bissau, who have won both of their opening fixtures.

The condition of the pitch became a major talking point before and after kick-off, with Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle describing the surface as “very bad.”

Chelle also pointed to the extreme heat and Guinea-Bissau’s familiarity with the conditions as factors that worked in the hosts’ favour.

“They know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch, but for us it was the first time,” Chelle said.

The coach also admitted that Nigeria lacked the aggression and intensity displayed by the hosts.

Reports from Nigerian outlets subsequently claimed that several key players had expressed concerns about playing on the uneven surface because of the potential risk of injury.

According to those reports, Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze, George Ilenikhena and Ademola Lookman were among the players affected by the situation.

Aina’s previous long-term hamstring injury, suffered while playing on a poor pitch in South Africa, was reportedly a particular concern.

Lookman eventually started the match, while Aina and Chukwueze were named among the substitutes and Ilenikhena did not start.

The reports have not been independently confirmed in full, but they have added another dimension to the discussion surrounding Nigeria’s preparations for the fixture.

The pitch appeared to make it difficult for the Super Eagles to establish sustained control of the game.

Nigeria enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to move the ball cleanly and consistently, while Guinea-Bissau appeared more comfortable with the conditions and capitalised on defensive errors.

The hosts ultimately produced the more effective performance, scoring once in the first half and twice after the interval to secure a convincing victory.

For Nigeria, the result represents an early setback in their quest to qualify for the 2027 AFCON.

With Tanzania already assured of their place as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, Nigeria’s remaining qualification route becomes increasingly important, particularly with Guinea-Bissau now having a three-point advantage.

The Super Eagles’ next qualifying assignments will come in November, when they face Tanzania in a double-header.

Beyond the result itself, the match has also reignited questions about CAF’s oversight of international match venues, particularly the standards required to protect players competing on pitches considered unsuitable for high-level football.

The issue also highlights the continuing tension between national-team obligations and player welfare, especially when clubs and players have concerns about injury risks associated with substandard playing surfaces.
