Newly capped Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is reportedly on the verge of joining Derby County from fellow Championship side Wrexham, although the proposed transfer has yet to receive official confirmation.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was close to finalising the move, with only minor details remaining before the deal could be completed. The report also claimed that a routine medical had been scheduled ahead of an official announcement.
Okonkwo, who featured prominently during Wrexham’s pre-season preparations, was notably absent from the club’s friendly against Liverpool, further fuelling speculation over his future.
However, subsequent reports from Derby County-focused sources suggested that Wrexham’s media team had dismissed claims that the goalkeeper had already undergone a medical. While that response cast doubt on the timeline of the move, it did not rule out ongoing negotiations or interest from Derby County.
As of 31 July 2026, no official announcement has been made by either club, with Okonkwo still listed as a Wrexham player.
From Arsenal Prospect to Championship Standout
Born in Camden, London, on September 9, 2001, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, Okonkwo joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight and progressed through the club’s youth ranks. Although he never made a senior appearance for the Gunners, he gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells with Crewe Alexandra, Austrian club Sturm Graz, and Wrexham.
Following a successful loan campaign during the 2023/24 season, Wrexham signed the towering goalkeeper on a permanent deal in the summer of 2024.
Standing at nearly 2 metres (6ft 6in), Okonkwo quickly established himself as Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper, playing a crucial role in the club’s rise to the Championship. He has made well over 100 appearances across all competitions and has become one of the club’s most consistent performers.
Reports earlier in the year indicated that negotiations over a contract extension had stalled, leaving Okonkwo with just one year remaining on his current deal and attracting interest from several Championship clubs, including previous links with Leicester City.
Super Eagles Breakthrough
Okonkwo represented England at the youth level from under-16 to under-18 before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria.
After FIFA approved his one-time nationality switch in April 2026, he earned his first senior call-up for the Super Eagles and made an immediate impact during the Unity Cup, keeping clean sheets against Zimbabwe and Jamaica as Nigeria lifted the trophy.
The goalkeeper currently has two senior international caps and is regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest goalkeeping prospects.
A move to Derby County, if completed, would allow Okonkwo to remain in the English Championship while offering a fresh challenge and the opportunity to continue playing regular first-team football.
