2 Min Read

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has sent Nigerian fans into a frenzy after confidently declaring that the Super Eagles are ready to lift the AFCON trophy in Morocco next year.

Iwobi, the longest-serving player in the current squad, has seen it all, from the bronze finish in Egypt 2019 to the heartbreaking silver medal at AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire. Now, he believes the only step left is finally bringing the trophy home, something Nigeria last achieved in 2013.

Iwobi Speaks Big at CAF’s European Trophy Tour

To build global hype ahead of the tournament (running from December 21 to January 18 in the middle of Europe’s football season), CAF launched a European trophy tour, kicking off in London.

Iwobi was front and center at the event, joining former Arsenal star Alex Song, ex-club co-owner David Dein, and Afrobeats names Odumodublvck and Stonebwoy.

When asked by Ay Shuga about Nigeria’s chances, Iwobi didn’t hesitate:

“Yes, of course. The last AFCON, we were really close. The only way we can improve from the last AFCON is to win the next one.
We’ve got the players to do so; we believe so, we just have to prove it.
I want to manifest it Nigeria will win it.”

Why His Confidence Matters

Though the mood around the national team remains low after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Iwobi insists the talent, belief, and ambition are all there. A strong AFCON performance could shift everything: fan morale, team mentality, and the entire narrative around the Super Eagles.

Whether Nigeria can turn Iwobi’s bold prediction into reality now depends on the players, the system, and the changes waiting to be implemented.
