Nigeria international Abdullahi Bewene has committed his future to Baník Ostrava after signing a new long-term contract that will keep him at the Czech First League club until June 2031.
The 21-year-old defender, who made his Super Eagles debut earlier this year, signed the extension on Wednesday as the Czech side moved quickly to secure one of their most promising young talents amid growing transfer interest.
Born in Abuja on November 29, 2004, Bewene has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Baník Ostrava as a teenager. After progressing through the club’s academy and reserve team, he established himself as a regular in the first team during the 2025/26 Chance Liga season.
His impressive performances also earned him international recognition, receiving his maiden Super Eagles call-up under head coach Éric Chelle. The versatile defender made his senior debut for Nigeria in June 2026, featuring in international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Baník Ostrava’s sporting director Luděk Mikloško praised Bewene’s rapid development and explained why the club was eager to secure his long-term future.
“Bewene is one of the players with whom we have recently recorded very interesting performance progress. We are convinced that he has not yet reached his ceiling. He has the attributes for top-level football, and by extending his contract we are ensuring continued cooperation with a player who has the potential to be very important for Baník in the coming seasons.”
Mikloško also described the extension as a statement of the club’s ambition.
“With this long-term contract for a player who was in great demand on the market, we are showing our ambitions for the future.
Bewene’s agent, Jakub Szkibik of CSC Agency, reflected on the defender’s journey from Nigeria to European football.
“We discovered Bewe at the age of seventeen in the academy in Abuja, and we are happy that he gradually worked his way up to the first team of Baník and the Nigerian national team. We greatly appreciate the trust that Baník placed in him years ago.”
Despite the contract extension, speculation surrounding Bewene’s future is expected to continue.
The Nigerian has reportedly attracted interest from Belgian side Gent, French Ligue 1 club Le Havre, and Czech champions Slavia Prague, with his growing reputation making him one of the most sought-after young defenders in the Czech league.
Reports suggest the new deal is designed to protect Baník Ostrava’s investment rather than rule out a future transfer, with the club remaining open to offers that match their valuation.
Capable of operating across the backline and on the right flank, Bewene has impressed with his athleticism, composure in possession, and ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases of play.
