Nigeria international Benjamin Fredrick was absent from Brentford’s squad for Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season victory over League One side Wycombe Wanderers, as the Premier League club continues to carefully manage his return from a long-term knee injury.
The 21-year-old centre-back recently signed a new four-year contract with the Bees after being promoted to the first-team squad, but was not involved in the behind-closed-doors friendly at Jersey Road despite travelling with the team during their pre-season training camp in Portugal.
Brentford are taking a cautious approach to Fredrick’s recovery following the serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of last season.
The defender suffered the setback in November 2025 while on a season-long loan at Belgian side FCV Dender, bringing an impressive spell in the Belgian Pro League to an abrupt end after making 15 appearances.
Although Fredrick has returned to full training and is understood to be back to full fitness, the club is gradually reintroducing him to competitive action to avoid any risk of aggravating the injury.
Club officials are reportedly prioritising his long-term development over an immediate return to match action, believing a measured rehabilitation process will better prepare him for the demands of the Premier League season.
Brentford produced an impressive performance against Wycombe despite Fredrick’s absence.
Vitaly Janelt opened the scoring midway through the first half before Dango Ouattara doubled the advantage before the interval.
The visitors briefly threatened a comeback when Emre Tezgel found the net early in the second half, but Brentford quickly restored control.
Summer signings Jaidon Anthony and Callum Wilson combined for the third goal before Keane Lewis-Potter completed the scoring with a fine late finish. New midfielder Mamadou Sangaré also made his first appearance for the club after coming on as a substitute.
Fredrick’s rise has been one of the success stories within Brentford’s player development system.
The Kaduna-born defender joined Brentford B on loan from Simoiben Football Academy in 2023 before making the move permanent, quickly establishing himself as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
His outstanding performances earned him the Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year award during the 2024/25 campaign, while he also helped the club’s under-21 side win the Professional Development League title.
His impressive club form led to a senior Super Eagles debut in 2025, and he went on to feature during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign before injury interrupted his progress.
Head coach Keith Andrews has previously expressed confidence in the young defender’s ability, emphasising the importance of rebuilding match fitness after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Barring any setbacks, Fredrick is expected to be available for the start of the new Premier League season and could feature in both league and domestic cup competitions as he continues his return to full competitive action.
Brentford will continue their pre-season preparations when they travel to France to face Rennes on Saturday, with Fredrick hoping to edge closer to his long-awaited return to matchday action.
