Nigeria’s football administration has been thrown into fresh uncertainty following reports that the Ibrahim Musa Gusau-led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board could be dissolved, with former NFF president Amaju Pinnick reportedly emerging as a leading candidate to head a proposed interim or normalisation committee.
The reported plan comes amid growing frustration over the country’s recent struggles at the international level.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive edition, while the Super Falcons, Africa’s most successful women’s national team with 10 continental titles, also suffered a major setback after failing to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
According to reports circulating this week, the presidency directed the National Sports Commission (NSC) to consider a major restructuring of Nigerian football, including replacing the current NFF board with an interim committee expected to oversee the administration of the sport for an initial three-month period.
Pinnick, who served as NFF president for eight years, has subsequently been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to head the proposed body.
However, the situation remains far from settled.
Reports from more established outlets, including The Guardian, indicated that an earlier proposal to appoint Pinnick had faced resistance from some senior officials within the Presidency.
The NSC has also publicly denied reports that the Federal Government had ordered Gusau and his board to immediately resign, stressing that consultations surrounding a possible normalisation committee were still ongoing.
There are suggestions that the current NFF board could be permitted to complete its tenure in September before any new interim structure assumes responsibility.
One of the major consequences of such a move could be the cancellation or postponement of the NFF elective congress reportedly scheduled to take place in Lafia, Nasarawa State, later in September.
The potential intervention has also raised concerns about Nigeria’s relationship with FIFA, whose statutes generally prohibit government or other third-party interference in the affairs of member associations.
The NSC has reportedly engaged with FIFA over the proposed restructuring in an effort to avoid any misunderstanding that could expose Nigerian football to sanctions.
Meanwhile, Gusau has continued to defend his administration and recently inaugurated a fact-finding committee to investigate the national teams‘ recent failures.
The NFF president has called for a thorough examination of the factors behind Nigeria’s disappointing results rather than allowing the setbacks to go without investigation.
The possibility of Pinnick’s return has also divided opinion among Nigerian football stakeholders.
While some see the potential appointment of an experienced administrator as an opportunity to stabilise the game and restore confidence, others have criticised the idea of bringing back former officials, arguing that previous administrations also experienced major qualification setbacks.
The debate reflects a wider frustration within Nigerian football, where poor results on the pitch have increasingly become intertwined with questions surrounding the administration of the game.
For now, no final decision has been officially announced regarding the dissolution of the Gusau-led board or the appointment of a normalisation committee.
With the NFF congress and the board’s tenure approaching a critical stage, attention will remain firmly on the NSC and the Presidency for clarification on the future structure of Nigerian football.
Whatever decision eventually emerges, the unfolding crisis highlights the growing pressure on Nigeria’s football authorities to deliver both administrative stability and improved results on the international stage.
