Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered their first defeat of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after losing 2-0 to Burkina Faso in their final Group B fixture on Sunday. Despite the setback, the seven-time African champions progressed to the semi-finals as group runners-up.
The defeat brought an end to Nigeria’s perfect start to the tournament, having opened their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Ghana before cruising to a 3-0 win against Togo. Those back-to-back victories ensured Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side had already secured qualification before facing Burkina Faso.
Burkina Faso, however, delivered a composed and clinical performance to finish top of Group B with seven points from three matches. Nigeria followed with six points, while Ghana ended third with two points and Togo finished bottom with one.
The Young Stallions took control of the contest in the 23rd minute when Alassane Bagayogo rose highest to head home from a well-delivered corner kick, giving Burkina Faso a deserved lead after an energetic opening spell.
Just 13 minutes later, Burkina Faso doubled their advantage in spectacular fashion. Mohamed Zongo unleashed a curling free-kick from around 30 yards that sailed beyond the Nigerian goalkeeper, leaving the Flying Eagles with a mountain to climb before halftime.
Nigeria showed greater urgency after the break and enjoyed more possession, but the defending champions struggled to break down Burkina Faso’s disciplined defensive setup. Coach Maikaba introduced several substitutes in an attempt to spark a comeback, yet clear-cut opportunities remained few and far between as Burkina Faso comfortably protected their lead until the final whistle.
While the result halted Nigeria’s winning run, it does little to diminish the team’s ambitions in the tournament. The Flying Eagles, who lifted the WAFU B U-20 title in 2024 after defeating Ghana in the final, remain firmly in contention to defend their crown.
Attention now shifts to the knockout stage, where Nigeria will face tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire in what promises to be a fiercely contested semi-final. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will take on Niger for the other place in the final.
With qualification for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana reserved for the two finalists, the stakes could not be higher. The Flying Eagles will need to quickly put this disappointing result behind them as they seek to return to winning ways, keep their title defence alive, and secure their place on the continental stage.
