The Bayelsa State government has officially launched its campaign to return to the pinnacle of Nigerian club football, appointing highly-rated tactician Abdul Maikaba as the new Technical Adviser of Bayelsa United FC.
The high-stakes appointment comes with a singular, non-negotiable mandate: secure immediate promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) next season.
The official unveiling, conducted on Thursday in Yenagoa by Deputy Governor Peter Akpe, carried an air of urgency. Expressing the administration’s stance, Akpe revealed that Governor Douye Diri was deeply displeased with the club’s recent relegation.
To rectify the setback, the government has charged the Dr. Peter Singabele-led interim management board and the new coaching staff to work relentlessly to salvage the club’s elite status.
“There is no room for delay. The technical crew must work tirelessly to restore Bayelsa United’s place among Nigeria’s top-flight clubs before the end of the coming season.” — Deputy Governor Peter Akpe
To ensure the rebuilding phase yields instant results, the state has paired Maikaba with another established name in domestic football. Former Go-Round FC manager Ngozi Elechi has been named as Maikaba’s assistant.
Together, the duo is tasked with overhauling the squad, instilling discipline, and constructing a promotion-worthy campaign from day one.
Widely celebrated across the country for his attractive, attack-minded brand of football, Maikaba brings an enviable resume of top-flight experience to the South-South outfit. Having managed some of the most pressure-cooker environments in Nigerian football, his previous stints include:
- Akwa United
- Enyimba FC
- Plateau United
- Rangers International
- Kano Pillars
- Wikki Tourists
With a tactician of Maikaba’s caliber at the helm, Bayelsa United has sent a clear warning to their lower-division rivals: their stay in the second tier will be as brief as possible.
