Nigeria has received a major boost ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with highly-rated striker George Ilenikhena agreeing to represent the Super Eagles after a successful meeting with head coach Eric Chelle.
The 19-year-old Al-Ittihad forward has reportedly committed his international future to Nigeria following months of discussions led by Chelle, who made recruiting the Nigerian-born talent one of his top priorities.
According to reports, the Super Eagles coach finally convinced the highly sought-after striker after nearly a year of pursuing the dual-eligible youngster, securing one of Nigeria’s most significant international recruitment victories in recent years.
Born in Lagos on August 16, 2006, Ilenikhena relocated to France with his family at the age of three and developed through the country’s football system.
The powerful forward first rose to prominence at Amiens before earning a move to Belgian champions Royal Antwerp, where his impressive performances attracted widespread attention. He later joined AS Monaco, continuing his rapid development before completing a high-profile €33 million transfer to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ittihad in early 2026 as the club’s replacement for legendary striker Karim Benzema.
Although he represented France at youth level and had long been viewed as a potential future international for Les Bleus, Ilenikhena never earned a senior cap and remained fully eligible to play for Nigeria through his birth and Nigerian passport.
Earlier this year, the teenager reportedly declined an invitation to join the Super Eagles while keeping open the possibility of representing France. However, following extensive discussions with Chelle and the Nigeria Football Federation, the striker has now decided to commit his international future to the three-time African champions.
His arrival provides Nigeria with another exciting attacking option alongside established stars such as Victor Osimhen, adding pace, power, and clinical finishing to an already talented frontline.
Known for his explosive acceleration, intelligent movement, and composure in front of goal, Ilenikhena is regarded as one of the brightest young Nigerian forwards in world football and is widely expected to play an important role in the Super Eagles’ future.
Reports suggest the teenager could receive his first senior call-up for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying fixtures in September, beginning with the clash against Tanzania.
Since taking charge of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle has prioritised strengthening the squad by convincing talented dual-national players to represent Nigeria, particularly in key attacking positions. Securing Ilenikhena’s commitment is seen as another major success in that strategy.
The decision also comes at an important stage in Nigeria’s rebuilding process as the Super Eagles continue preparing for upcoming continental competitions and future FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns.
With his impressive club pedigree and enormous potential, many Nigerian supporters will now eagerly await Ilenikhena’s international debut, hoping he can develop into one of the country’s next generation of attacking stars.
George Ilenikhena’s decision to represent Nigeria marks a significant victory for Eric Chelle and the Super Eagles, adding one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards to an already formidable attacking lineup.
