Nigerian international Umar Sadiq was the hero for Valencia CF on Sunday, coming off the bench to score a stunning second-half header and secure a massive 1-0 victory over Athletic Club.
The Matchday 35 triumph at the formidable San Mamés Stadium represents a monumental milestone for Los Che: it is their first away win in Bilbao in 16 attempts. More importantly, the three points provide a massive boost in Valencia’s fierce battle against relegation.
Instant Impact off the Bench
With the game deadlocked, Valencia manager Carlos Corberán made a bold triple substitution in the 69th minute, introducing Sadiq alongside Largie Ramazani and Filip Ugrinic.
The tactical gamble paid off almost immediately. Just three minutes after entering the pitch, Sadiq sparked wild celebrations:
- The Build-up: Javi Guerra and Ramazani launched a rapid counter-attack, releasing Luis Rioja down the left wing.
- The Delivery: Rioja whipped a pinpoint cross into the heart of the penalty area.
- The Finish: Sadiq rose magnificently, outjumping Athletic defender Dani Vivian to power a clinical header past goalkeeper Unai Simón.
“It was the first ball I touched, but the most important thing is the team that we work together,” Sadiq said post-match. “These are three very important points for the team. Winning here is very important at a tough stadium. We’re very happy.”
Gritty Defence Secures Priceless Three Points
Following the goal, Valencia defended resolutely to protect their lead. Goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski was in inspired form, making several crucial interventions, including a spectacular flying save late in the game to deny Unai Gómez.
Athletic Club struggled to find their usual rhythm, particularly after losing star winger Nico Williams to a first-half injury.
With this victory, Valencia climb to 42 points in the La Liga table, putting them five points clear of the relegation zone with only three matches left in the season.
Survival in Sight
The victory caps off a turbulent week but leaves Valencia on the cusp of safety. Captain José Gayà looked ahead to the final stretch, stating: “It’s a very important victory, and on Thursday we want to get another three points.”
For Sadiq, his 20-minute cameo proved priceless. The 29-year-old Super Eagles forward continues to deliver in high-stakes moments for his club, providing a timely boost of confidence for both Valencia and the Nigerian national team ahead of the summer.
Valencia will now look to all but guarantee their top-flight status when they host Rayo Vallecano at Mestalla in their next outing.
