Eric Chelle has confirmed that the Nigeria national football team is closely monitoring highly rated teenage striker George Ilenikhena ahead of a possible future call-up.
The 19-year-old Lagos-born forward remains one of the brightest young Nigerian-eligible talents in world football, and Chelle revealed that the Super Eagles coaching staff are actively tracking his progress.
Chelle Monitoring Nigerian Talent Abroad
Speaking in London after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe national football team in the Unity Cup, Chelle explained that his technical crew constantly scouts players across Europe and beyond.
The Super Eagles coach specifically referenced Ilenikhena’s recent move to Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, where the striker reportedly arrived as a replacement for former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.
“We follow a lot of players in Europe, particularly in Germany and England,” Chelle said.
“Some of them in Saudi because we have a striker who played for Monaco; he is a good player. We follow a lot of players.”
“Barcelona Destroyer” Reputation
Before his move to Saudi Arabia, Ilenikhena gained widespread attention during spells with Royal Antwerp and AS Monaco.
The young forward earned the nickname “Barcelona destroyer” after scoring in consecutive UEFA Champions League matches against FC Barcelona, showcasing his pace, composure, and finishing ability on Europe’s biggest stage.
Focus on Building a Winning Team
While discussing recruitment and scouting, Chelle stressed that his primary objective is to build a winning mentality within the current Super Eagles squad.
“We have a good and great team, and at this moment they are at the top, so this is the moment that they are supposed to win something,” Chelle stated.

Nigeria’s coaching staff are expected to continue efforts to secure Ilenikhena’s international commitment as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
