Complete set of fixtures played this weekend, which involved eight home wins, a draw and an away win. Nine of the ten matches played produced goals, sixteen goals scored, six matches ended with a 1 goal to nil score line, but also an interesting five goal thriller, as the race hots up at the top and bottom of the Nigerian Professional Football League. After this weekend’s results there are nine more matches to be played.
MFM FC 1 VS 0 WIKKI TOURIST
After their midweek defeat to Rivers united, MFM needed to get a win at home in their quest for the title and they responded well especially as title rivals Plateau United were on the road. A 35th minute goal scored by Stephen Odey, his 17th of the season turned out to be the difference between the sides.
NIGER TORNADOES 1 VS 0 PLATEAU UNITED
Tornadoes were well beaten last week by Enyimba with three unreplied goals, as they played hosts to table toppers Plateau United who defeated Akwa united by the same score line. A lone goal as early as the 4th minute, a penalty converted by Samuel Agba the eventual decider.
IFEANYI UBAH 1 VS 0 ENYIMBA
These two eastern giants met in an oriental derby, billed as the star match of the weekend it did not disappoint. After a goalless first half, the breakthrough came via star player Godwin Obaje in the 50th minute, as Ifeanyi Ubah eventually held on for the win.
ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI 0 VS 0 RIVERS UNITED
ABS were defeated at home last weekend by Sunshine and needed to bounce back as coach Henry Makinwa has been given a three match ultimatum, Rivers went into the game with a win in midweek against MFM. A difficult game with chances not converted, ending in a stalemate, a very good away point for the Port Harcourt based side.
AKWA UNITED 3 VS 0 GOMBE UNITED
Akwa lost to table toppers Plateau United last weekend, a disappointing result for them as they have their title aspirations. Well they bounced back in style, after a goalless first half 57th minute goal by Musa Newman breaking the deadlock and opened the floodgates with Alhassan Ibrahim converting from the spot in the 75th minute, while Christian Pyagbara put the game to bed with the third goal of the match in the 83rd minute. As Akwa United continue their quest for the title.
KANO PILLARS 2 VS 0 ENUGU RANGERS
Pillars and Rangers went into this match winless in their last two outings. Both goals for pillars in the first half, Jamiu Alimi with the opener in the 32nd minute, a header by Junior lukosa In the 43rd minute as pillars closed out the game in the second half.
EL KANEMI WARRIORS 1 VS 0 ABIA WARRIORS
These two teams had contrasting fortunes last weekend, a victory by two goals for Abia and a defeat away for El kanemi by the same scoreline. El kanemi have been very strong at home needing a win to keep in touch with the top of the table as they continue in their race for a continental spot. A lone goal the difference, penalty awarded to Elkanemi in the 23rd minute, duly converted by Samuel Matthias in the 30th minute after a lengthy discussion as El kanemi held on for all three points.
SHOOTING STARS 1 VS 0 KATSINA UNITED
Shooting stars relegation concerns have been softened by not losing in their previous two matches and playing at home all three points were needed, the breakthrough coming just before halftime, Wasiu Jimoh in the 44th minute with what would turn out to be the only goal of the tie, as shooting held on for a much needed win.
LOBI STARS 3 VS 2 REMO STARS
Despite tony Okpotu’s continuous scoring exploits, Lobi were defeated last weekend while Remo came into this match with a draw in midweek. Remo went behind to the host as early as the 9th minute, the in-form man Tony Okpotu with the goal but were back in it almost immediately with an audacious strike by Victor Chidume from way out.
Kinglsey Eduwo put the hosts in front just before halftime. Remo fought back in the second half and were rewarded via a goal by Ekene Awazie in the 70th minute, scores level until a defensive error in the 84th minute allowed Uchenna Eze give Lobi the lead for the third time in the tie, as they closed the game out for a win in an entertaining game.
SUNSHINE STARS 0 VS 1 NASARAWA UNITED
Consecutive victories for sunshine has seen them rise above the relegation zone, going into this match after a morale boosting victory last weekend against ABS. Nasarawa victorious in this one via a goal courtesy Abdulrahman Bashiru in the 39th minute.
The weekend results saw changes at the top and bottom, significant result would be MFM cutting Plateau uniteds lead to just two points while Akwa Uniteds win put them in a good position considering that they have an outstanding match yet to be played. At the bottom of the table Remo continue to look like relegation favourites, while ABS winless in five have also joined in the struggle.
