Nigeria’s Ngumoha Hopes Suffer Setback As England Make Their Move

2 Min Read

Nigeria’s hopes of securing the international allegiance of Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha have suffered a setback after England manager Thomas Tuchel included the highly rated winger in his latest senior squad.

Ngumoha is part of a 27-man England squad selected for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia, as England continue to monitor the progress of one of their most promising young talents.

The 18-year-old remains eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, but England’s latest move could bring the Super Eagles’ hopes under increasing pressure.

Ngumoha made his senior England debut in June, coming off the bench during a 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand. That appearance did not tie him permanently to England because it came in a friendly, leaving him eligible to switch allegiance under FIFA’s current rules.

However, the situation could change depending on how much playing time he receives during the upcoming international window.

Under FIFA’s eligibility regulations, a player may switch national teams if they have made no more than three senior appearances, provided those appearances were made before turning 21 and the other eligibility conditions are satisfied.

That means Ngumoha’s involvement in England’s upcoming fixtures could become crucial to his international future.

The Liverpool youngster has already represented England extensively at youth level, featuring for the Under-15, Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 teams.

His rapid progress has now seen him move into the senior setup following his emergence at Liverpool.

Ngumoha has made 35 appearances for the Reds, scoring twice, and continues to be viewed as one of the brightest young prospects in English football.

The situation also carries echoes of previous efforts involving England internationals Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, both of whom were eligible to represent Nigeria but ultimately continued with England.

For now, Ngumoha’s international future remains open. However, with England giving the Liverpool youngster another opportunity at senior level, the Super Eagles will be watching his involvement closely.
