The FCT Football Association has expressed shock following the death of legendary Nigerian coach and former Green Eagles’ player Kelechi Emeteole who died on Wednesday, June21 in a hospital in India.
The death of ‘Caterpillar’ as he is popularly known was confirmed by his wife in the wee hours of the mourning.
The FCT Association express sympathy on hearing the news of the untimely death of the former El Kanemi, Rangers, Heartland and Super Sand Eagles coach who battled with cancer before giving up the ghost.
Speaking on behalf of the FCT FA, Ag. Secretary FCT FA, Haruna Ilerika said “As a body, we regret the incidence and we send our sincere condolence to the family of late Caterpillar, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, the FCT Coaches Association and the football family at large.”
He added that “The mark he has made on earth and in the game of football will make it impossible to forget him. We will miss him greatly.
“We would hope that, in some way, our words of support may help bring a little bit of comfort to the family in this time of sadness.”
Before his death, Emetole played for the Eagles at the 1976 Africa Nations Cup in Ethiopia and served as assistant coach for the Golden Eaglets, Flying Eagles and Super Eagles.
Caterpillar was also a veteran Nigerian football gaffer who has managed clubs like Enyimba, Lobi Stars, Heartland, El-Kanemi Warriors and reigning Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers.
