Fulham advanced to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after a thrilling 5–4 penalty shootout victory over Wycombe Wanderers, following a tense 1–1 draw in regulation time at Craven Cottage.
Wycombe stunned the home crowd early, taking the lead in the fourth minute through Cauley Woodrow. However, Joshua King levelled the score for Fulham shortly after the restart in the 48th minute, forcing the contest into a penalty decider.
The Cottagers kept their composure from the spot, converting all five attempts to seal their passage into the last eight.
Bassey Shines in Defensive Role
Nigeria international Calvin Bassey impressed throughout the 90 minutes, operating in an unaccustomed left-back position. The versatile defender was a rock at the back, completing 88 passes, including 10 into the final third, and delivering two pinpoint long balls into the box.
Defensively, Bassey was immense, registering six tackles, two clearances, and 10 ball recoveries. He also won all of his ground duels and three aerial battles, underlining his composure and strength in one-on-one situations.
Iwobi’s Impactful Cameo
Introduced in the 65th minute, Alex Iwobi brought creativity and control to Fulham’s midfield. In just 25 minutes, the Super Eagles star completed 26 passes, created four chances, and delivered an accurate cross that troubled Wycombe’s defence.
Iwobi also contributed defensively with two ball recoveries and showed great composure by converting his penalty in the shootout.

The performance of both Bassey and Iwobi showcased their growing influence under Marco Silva. Their consistency and leadership have strengthened Fulham’s ambitions for domestic silverware this season.
