Former Super Eagles forward John Utaka has heaped praise on the Nigerian national team following their recent World Cup qualifying victory over Benin Republic, expressing full confidence in their chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the win, the former Montpellier and Portsmouth star lauded the players’ commitment and performance, describing the result as a reflection of hard work and renewed team spirit.
“They did extremely well. This is the type of football we want to see,” Utaka said. “The team is looking brighter than before, so the players deserve the victory and the opportunity to play in the playoffs. They have put in the work to reach this stage. We are proud of them because they truly showed commitment.”
Looking ahead to the playoffs, Utaka said he believes Nigeria has what it takes to go all the way.
“I believe we have a 100 percent chance of qualifying. I do not see Gabon beating us. With the level of consistency, I don’t see anyone stopping this team,” he added. “It won’t be easy, but no game is easy at this level. Football is all about moments, and you must seize them.”
The former international also took time to commend Akor Adams, who has been in fine form for both club and country.

“Akor is on fire. I saw this coming even before he got called up to the national team. He can score and has excellent footwork. I’m happy that all the work he’s put in is paying off,” Utaka noted.
He also reserved high praise for Victor Osimhen, calling the Napoli striker “the best in the world” and agreeing with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s recent statement.
“Victor Osimhen has been on fire for years. He has shown real consistency and always gives 100 percent whenever he plays. In terms of consistency, Osimhen is the best striker in the world. A top striker is not defined by a single moment — they prove their ability over time.”
Utaka further urged fans and the Nigeria Football Federation to continue supporting Chelle and the team’s project.
“The work Chelle is doing is starting to show. It’s all about patience — giving a person time to work and seeing what they are capable of. I believe his work is now visible. This is our country, and we want everything to go well.”
Utaka, who represented Nigeria at the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups and featured in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, enjoyed a glittering club career that saw him win the French Ligue 1 with Montpellier and the FA Cup with Portsmouth.
