Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has reaffirmed the critical role of women in national growth, pledging greater government support for their empowerment in sports and beyond.
The Critical Role of Women In National Growth

Speaking at the 7th edition of the Fame International Women’s Day (IWD) Football Tournament in Abuja on Friday, Olawande reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering opportunities for women and young people.
“Women are very important to the growth of anyone in this country. They are crucial to everybody’s life,” he said.
Olawande noted that the Ministry of Youth Development is setting the pace for women in sports, emphasizing the significance of collaboration across various sectors, including entertainment, technology, and agriculture.
“This is the first time in this country that we will have a young woman, a lawyer, as Minister of State for Youth. I vacated my seat for her to honor this day and ensure that it is a significant occasion for everyone to come together and explore the best ways to support women and young ladies,” he stated.
The Importance of Grassroots Sports Development

He further stressed the importance of grassroots sports development and inclusivity, applauding the participation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the tournament.
“This is the kind of event we want youths to be part of because it starts from the grassroots. I am very happy that we have the IDPs here. We want young ladies, female youths, and women to feel the government’s presence. We are bringing the government to their doorsteps,” he added.
Olawande assured that the government is committed to restructuring educational curricula and forming strategic partnerships, particularly with the National Sports Commission, to enhance youth development.
“We are looking at partnerships, most importantly with the Sports Commission. A lot will happen in the coming weeks to restructure the curricula. We want to harness women’s skills and ensure that those who excel get the best representation,” he said.
The minister also emphasized the Ministry’s efforts to empower youth across all local governments, revealing plans for new initiatives in sports, health, and agriculture.
“Youth is everywhere and in all departments. If there is one thing we want to do as a Ministry, it is collaboration and support to empower young people. We will upscale their skills and ensure representation in all local governments. In the coming months, you will see more initiatives in youth sports, youth in agriculture, and youth in health,” he assured.
The Fame International Women’s Day Football Tournament continues to serve as a platform for promoting gender equality and youth engagement, drawing participation from diverse communities across Nigeria.
