Elegbeleye Urges Sunshine Stars To Stay Focused and thumbs up for Nigerian Referees.

The Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Otunba (Hon.) Gbenga Elegbeleye has admonished all Sunshine Stars FC stakeholders to stay grounded in the wake of the team’s remarkable 1-0 victory over Rivers United in a week 30 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match in Portharcourt on Wednesday.

After Ezekiel Thompson’s 68th minute header helped Sunshine Stars beat their hosts to move clear of the relegation zone to 14th on the NPFL log, the former Director General of the National Sports Commission thanked every stakeholders of the team for their solidarity so far but cautioned that it was not yet over in a chat with Sunshine Stars FC Media.

“To all the stakeholders I want to say thank you, particularly Mr Governor  (Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu) for his support. Since the governor came in he ensured the players get paid every month. But I want to say here to everyone including the players it is not yet dancing time for us. Still some way to go and the hard work should continue.”


The Otunba of Ikare Land who witnessed how the referee cancelled two Sunshine Stars goals that appeared clean at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium yesterday said Nigerian referees when in their right elements are one of the very best in the world.


“Like every spectators I was amazed by the decision of the ref to cancelled the goals, but I want to say Nigerian referees are highly competent and can compete easily with the very best in the word. Trust me I have seen a lot of officiating even outside the country Nigerian referee are up there, though there could be need for improvement in some areas.”

After the victory Elegbeleye alongside Former Junior international, Prince Tunde Ogunja (member ODSFA Interim Management Committee) reconvened with the team at their base in Portharcourt and presented the players a surprise cash gift in appreciation of their efforts in Wednesday’s game.


While reacting on behalf of his elated colleagues, Sunshine Stars FC captain, Sunday Abe thanked the management for prioritising the players welfare, and again pledged that the team will always aim to do all stakeholders proud.
