Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a dream return to competitive football, producing a standout performance to help Chippa United earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Golden Arrows in their opening match of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
The Nigerian international kept a clean sheet and was deservedly named Man of the Match after a series of outstanding saves at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
Heroics Between the Posts
Golden Arrows enjoyed the better of the contest, dominating possession and creating the clearer scoring opportunities, but they found Nwabali in inspired form throughout the encounter.
Making his first league appearance since November 2025, the 30-year-old goalkeeper produced six crucial saves, including a remarkable double stop just before the hour mark to deny Ronaldo Van Neel.
Nwabali saved his best for last, making a superb point-blank leg save deep into stoppage time to keep out Thokozani Khumalo and preserve a valuable point for the Chilli Boys.
Golden Arrows also struck the crossbar early in the second half, but Nwabali’s commanding presence, confident handling of crosses and vocal organisation of his defence ensured Chippa United left with a clean sheet.

The statistics reflected just how influential the Nigerian goalkeeper was.
Nwabali faced 1.75 expected goals on target (xGOT) and finished the match with a 9.1 FotMob rating, the highest of any player on the pitch.
He also recorded:

A Successful Return
The performance marked an impressive start to Nwabali’s second spell at Chippa United.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper initially left the South African club in February 2026 by mutual consent following Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign, hoping to secure a move elsewhere.
Despite attracting reported interest from Europe, no transfer materialised, and after several months without a club, he returned to Chippa United in July 2026.
The club welcomed him back with an official statement, noting that the goalkeeper had “taken time away” before returning to continue his journey with the Eastern Cape outfit.
Super Eagles Ambitions
Since first joining Chippa United in 2022, Nwabali has established himself as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in South Africa’s top flight.
The latest clean sheet takes his tally to 23 shutouts in 70 Premiership appearances, further underlining his consistency.
His strong start to the new season also comes at an important time for the Super Eagles, where competition for the number one jersey continues to intensify.
With Maduka Okoye featuring prominently in recent international fixtures and Arthur Okonkwo also pushing for opportunities, Nwabali’s return to regular football strengthens his case for a recall under Eric Chelle.
For Chippa United, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, the draw provides a solid foundation ahead of their next league fixture against Richards Bay on August 11.
For Nwabali, the clean sheet and Man of the Match award represent the perfect response after a challenging period away from competitive football, signalling that the experienced shot-stopper is ready to re-establish himself at both club and international levels.
