Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has received a major boost as young midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro returned to action for Pisa on Monday.
Akinsanmiro had been sidelined for the past month due to a shoulder injury sustained during a Serie B clash between Pisa and Cremonese on November 7.
Initially expected to return earlier, the 21-year-old underwent a late fitness check to determine his availability for Pisa’s match against Parma.
Although he did not start, Akinsanmiro was introduced at halftime and immediately influenced the game.
Pisa dominated the second half, holding 70 percent possession, compared to an evenly contested first half.
The midfielder completed 28 passes with 96 percent accuracy, delivered four key passes, and recorded two successful dribbles and one tackle.
Despite his impressive performance, Pisa fell 1-0. Akinsanmiro, however, emerged as the highest-rated player on the pitch with an 8.1 rating from Sofascore.
His return is particularly significant for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With limited established options in midfield, Akinsanmiro’s current form and European experience make him a strong contender for coach Chelle’s final squad.
The Nigerian talent, who previously played in the domestic league before moving to Europe, has already been included in the 55-man provisional list, with reports suggesting he will make the final selection.
