Sunday Oliseh Tells Chelle: “Be Stubborn” as Super Eagles Prepare for AFCON Push

3 Min Read

Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has urged head coach Eric Chelle to shut out external pressure and assert full authority over squad selection and tactics as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Although Oliseh initially preferred that a Nigerian coach be appointed over another foreign manager, the 1994 AFCON winner admitted that Chelle has exceeded expectations so far.

Oliseh: “Chelle must stand his ground.”

Speaking on the Football Insight show, Oliseh said he remains confident that the Super Eagles have what it takes to challenge for the title, provided Chelle stays firm in the face of outside interference.

“Inasmuch as people are pessimistic, I am very optimistic that the Super Eagles can do very well at this tournament,” Oliseh said.

“The first thing I think the manager has to do is to grow a bit stubborn. It is no secret that people from outside will try to influence who plays and who doesn’t. He has to stand his ground and show personality.”

Oliseh stressed that Chelle must provide leadership that commands respect, not fear, noting that midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi has already earned admiration within the squad.

“No one doubts the respect the team has for Ndidi. He plays every game. I’m not pushing for who will be captain, but I think he will be the captain since he captained the last game.”

Tactical clarity needed after DR Congo test

Oliseh also highlighted the need for Chelle to tighten Nigeria’s tactical discipline, pointing to the recent friendly loss against DR Congo as an example of where improvements are needed.

“He has to be clear tactically. Peseiro was very defensive at the last Nations Cup; there is nothing wrong with being compact,” he explained.
“Against DR Congo, we were too loose, too open, and they ran rings around us. That is something that has to change.”

With AFCON 2025 fast approaching, Oliseh’s message is clear:
Nigeria have the talent to win it but only if Chelle takes full control and shuts out the noise
