Rangers International have shifted their attention to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following their elimination from the CAF Champions League, with a crucial Matchday 11 clash against Rivers United now on the horizon.
The defending NPFL champions were knocked out of the continental competition after suffering a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Algerian side MC Alger. Despite taking a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Rangers lost the return fixture 3-0, ending their hopes of progressing to the next stage.
With their continental campaign over, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men must now concentrate on domestic football as they prepare for a difficult trip to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United on Sunday, November 1.
The Enugu-based side will be eager to put their continental disappointment behind them and maintain their push for another league title. The upcoming encounter also presents an opportunity to make a statement against one of their closest rivals in the race for the NPFL crown.
Rangers confirmed their focus on the fixture through a post on their official X account, stating: “Focus shifts to the next battle! We travel to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United FC in our next NPFL fixture. The quest for those crucial three points continues.”
The meeting is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of Matchday 11, with both clubs firmly involved in the title race.
Rivers United currently lead the NPFL standings with 17 points from 10 matches. Rangers also have 17 points but have played only eight games, leaving them with two matches in hand.
The difference in games played makes the contest particularly important for both teams. Rivers United will want to protect their position at the top, while Rangers have an opportunity to strengthen their title challenge and potentially move ahead as they make up their outstanding fixtures.
However, Rangers will need to respond positively after their European disappointment. Their elimination from the CAF Champions League means the league is now their main focus, and a strong performance against Rivers United would help restore confidence within the squad.
Rivers United will also approach the encounter looking to return to winning ways after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance in Benin City on October 25.
The Port Harcourt club had fought back to equalise through Chijioke Mbaoma in the 73rd minute after Freeman Wuchirwe opened the scoring for Bendel Insurance. However, Jonathan James struck in the 89th minute to give the hosts all three points.

That defeat means Rivers United cannot afford to take their position at the top for granted, especially with Rangers having two games in hand. A victory on home soil would give the Pride of Rivers a valuable boost and help them maintain their advantage in the title race.
Playing at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium could provide Rivers United with an important advantage, but they will face a Rangers side determined to recover from its continental setback.
The upcoming clash carries significant weight for both teams as the NPFL season continues. Rangers will be looking to translate their attention back to domestic football into a strong result, while Rivers United will aim to make home advantage count.
With both clubs level on 17 points, the encounter could have an important impact on the early league standings. Rangers’ two games in hand give them additional opportunities, but they must still convert those fixtures into points.
For Ilechukwu and his players, the immediate task is to put the disappointment of the MC Alger defeat behind them and focus on the challenge ahead. A positive result in Port Harcourt would offer a timely response and reinforce their determination to defend the NPFL title.
Rivers United, meanwhile, will be keen to show that their recent loss was only a temporary setback. With the two title contenders preparing to meet, Sunday’s fixture promises to be a significant test of their ambitions.
