Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has criticised Manchester United’s recent performances, describing their football as “awful to watch” amid a disappointing start to the season.
The former Chelsea midfielder shared his views on The Obi One Podcast, where he discussed the club’s struggles under manager Michael Carrick. Mikel believes United supporters have every right to express their frustration after watching their team struggle to produce convincing performances.
“They were dreadful to watch, awful to watch. It was a disaster,” Mikel said, reflecting on United’s recent displays.
The Nigerian football legend also questioned whether Carrick was ready for the demands of managing a club of United’s size, arguing that the team needs stronger leadership and a clear direction to recover from its current difficulties.
Manchester United Struggle for Consistency
United’s performances have come under increasing scrutiny following a poor run of results. According to Pulse Sports, the Red Devils had gone eight games without a win and recorded only two victories in their opening 12 matches across all competitions.
The results have increased pressure on Carrick, who was handed the permanent managerial role during the summer after guiding the club to Champions League qualification last season.
However, his team has struggled to maintain that momentum, with inconsistent results raising questions about its playing style, organisation and ability to compete at the highest level.
Mikel believes the club’s problems go beyond individual performances and require a broader rethink of its footballing direction. He also pointed to the frustration among supporters, who expect more from a club with United’s history and resources.
Mikel Backs Unai Emery for Manchester United Job
As discussions about Carrick’s future continue, Mikel has identified Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as his preferred candidate to lead United.
The former Chelsea midfielder praised Emery’s work at Villa, highlighting the Spaniard’s tactical approach, recruitment decisions and ability to maintain a competitive team despite changes to the squad.
Mikel believes United would benefit from appointing an experienced manager capable of establishing a clear identity and building a team that can compete consistently.
Emery has developed a strong reputation through his work in European football, particularly his success in the UEFA Europa League and his efforts to make Aston Villa competitive against established Premier League sides.
Mikel’s recommendation reflects his belief that United need more than a short-term solution. He wants the club to give an experienced coach the authority and resources required to rebuild the squad and restore confidence among supporters.
Chelsea Clash Presents Another Test
Manchester United’s next challenge is a Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31.
The fixture will provide another important test for Carrick and his players as they attempt to respond to criticism and improve their results.
Facing Chelsea will also bring added interest because Mikel spent more than a decade at Stamford Bridge, winning major domestic and European honours with the London club.
For United, a positive result could help ease some of the pressure surrounding the team. Another disappointing performance, however, would likely intensify questions about the manager and the club’s overall direction.
Mikel’s comments have added to the debate surrounding United’s struggles, with the former midfielder making it clear that he believes the club needs significant improvement in both its performances and its long-term planning.
