Former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has joined a National Sports Commission (NSC) delegation in discussions with FIFA over the proposed establishment of a normalisation committee to temporarily oversee Nigerian football.
The talks come in the wake of the mass resignation of the Ibrahim Musa Gusau-led NFF executive committee in August 2026, which plunged the country’s football administration into a period of uncertainty.
Gusau, NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi and the remaining members of the executive committee resigned on August 27 following mounting pressure over the poor performance of Nigeria’s national teams. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons missed out on the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament was established.
With the NFF leadership now vacant, the NSC has opened discussions with FIFA on the formation of a normalisation committee that could manage the federation for about three months.
The proposed committee is expected to oversee the day-to-day administration of the NFF, support the national teams and prepare the ground for fresh elections. The electoral process has reportedly been pushed back to January after the planned September congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State, was cancelled.
The acting NFF general secretary has also dissolved the previous electoral committee as part of the process of preparing for a new election timetable.
Pinnick’s presence in the delegation has attracted particular attention. The former NFF president served between 2014 and 2022 and currently occupies the position of Deputy Chair of FIFA’s Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee.
Despite his involvement in the FIFA discussions, Pinnick has previously stated publicly that he was not interested in heading a normalisation committee. His participation has nevertheless raised questions among some stakeholders, particularly those who believe that figures associated with previous administrations should not play a central role in the next phase of Nigerian football governance.
Critics argue that the challenges facing Nigerian football did not begin with the Gusau administration and that a genuine restructuring should bring in independent figures with fresh ideas rather than relying heavily on former administrators.
FIFA’s involvement is considered crucial because of its strict rules protecting the independence of national football associations. The world governing body has already expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding the resignation of the previous NFF leadership and warned that government interference could potentially lead to sanctions.
The NSC and Nigerian authorities are therefore expected to ensure that any normalisation process is carried out in accordance with FIFA and CAF statutes.
If approved, the normalisation committee would have a limited mandate: stabilising the federation, ensuring the continued functioning of Nigerian football and organising credible elections that would produce a new elected leadership.
President Bola Tinubu has called for comprehensive reforms of Nigerian football, with governance, accountability and the development of the sport among the major issues requiring attention.
The coming months will therefore be critical for Nigerian football. While the proposed normalisation committee could provide an opportunity to reset the administration after a turbulent period, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the process produces genuinely independent leadership or simply brings familiar figures back into positions of influence.
For now, the focus remains on the discussions with FIFA and CAF as Nigerian football authorities seek to establish a transitional structure that can restore stability and prevent the country from becoming isolated from the international game.
