However, CAF’s competition regulations dictate that when three or more teams finish level on points, the first tiebreakers are based solely on the matches played between those tied teams.
CAF’s Tiebreaking Criteria
For teams level on points, CAF applies the following order:
- Points obtained in matches between the tied teams.
- Goal difference in matches between the tied teams.
- Goals scored in matches between the tied teams.
- If teams remain level, further head-to-head criteria are applied before overall goal difference and overall goals scored are considered.
This means overall goal difference is not the deciding factor unless the head-to-head criteria fail to separate the teams.
The Mini-League That Decided Qualification
The three matches involving Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia produced the following results:

Why Zambia’s 6-0 Win Didn’t Matter
Zambia’s dominant victory over Egypt significantly boosted their overall goal difference, but those goals were irrelevant once three teams finished level on points.
Under CAF regulations, only the results involving Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia were used to determine the standings. Nigeria’s 3-2 defeat to Malawi and 1-0 victory over Zambia gave the Super Falcons three goals in the mini-league one more than Zambia managed in their head-to-head matches.
That crucial advantage proved decisive, sending Nigeria into the knockout stages and ending Zambia’s WAFCON campaign despite their superior overall goal difference.
