Former Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has completed a free transfer to Hungarian champions ETO FC Győr, signing a one-year contract with the club ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 38-year-old centre-back joins the Hungarian title holders after his contract with Cypriot side Aris Limassol expired, bringing a wealth of experience to a team preparing to defend its league crown and compete in European football.
Balogun enjoyed a productive spell in Cyprus, making 22 appearances for Aris Limassol last season while contributing two goals and one assist from defence.
Speaking after completing the move, the veteran defender expressed his excitement about joining the ambitious Hungarian side.
“I am very happy to be a player of ETO FC, as this is an extremely exciting project. I think the team has already shown what it is capable of in the first few matches, but now it is important to define and maintain the appropriate standard so that we can continue to build on the successes of last season. I look forward to joining the team and contributing my experience and strengths on and off the field.
ETO FC Győr, managed by former Celtic defender Efraín Juárez, are aiming to build on a memorable campaign after winning the Hungarian top-flight title last season.
The club has also made an impressive start to the new season, sitting at the top of the league table after the opening rounds as they target another successful domestic campaign.
Born in Berlin to a Nigerian father and German mother, Balogun has enjoyed a distinguished career across several of Europe’s top leagues.
He began his professional journey in Germany, representing Hannover 96, Werder Bremen, and Mainz 05, where he accumulated 75 Bundesliga appearances before earning a move to the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018.
The experienced defender later enjoyed a successful spell with Rangers, helping the Scottish giants win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup, while becoming a fan favourite for his leadership and defensive consistency.
On the international stage, Balogun earned 46 caps for Nigeria and was a key figure in the Super Eagles defence for several years.
He represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and played an important role as the Super Eagles secured a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
His arrival is expected to provide valuable leadership and experience to ETO FC Győr’s squad as the Hungarian champions look to retain their domestic title while competing on the European stage.
For Balogun, the move marks another chapter in a career that has taken him across Germany, England, Scotland, Cyprus, and now Hungary, as the veteran defender continues to compete at the highest level of European football.
