The stage is set for another thrilling Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season as reigning champions Rangers International prepare to begin the defence of their league crown against Katsina United in one of the standout fixtures of the opening weekend.

The Flying Antelopes will welcome Katsina United to the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as The Cathedral, in Enugu on Sunday, August 30, as they begin their quest to retain the title they won in impressive fashion last season.

Having lifted a record-extending ninth NPFL championship, Rangers will be determined to make an early statement in front of their home supporters, knowing that a positive start could set the tone for another successful campaign.

However, the curtain-raiser for the new season belongs to Ibadan, where Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) will host newly promoted Inter Lagos on Friday, August 28, at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

The fixture is set to be more than just the opening game of the campaign. It will mark Inter Lagos’ historic debut in Nigeria’s top flight after securing promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL), while also serving up an exciting South-West derby against one of the country’s most established clubs.

Across the country, football fans can expect an action-packed Matchday One as several clubs begin their pursuit of league glory, continental qualification, or survival.

Nine-time champions Enyimba face a tricky away trip to Niger Tornadoes, while Rivers United will look to maximise home advantage when they host Plateau United in Port Harcourt.

In Benin City, Bendel Insurance welcome returning top-flight side Warri Wolves in a highly anticipated South-South derby, while Abia Warriors begin their campaign at home against Kun Khalifat FC.

Kwara United will battle Kano Pillars in Ilorin in another fixture expected to draw significant attention, while Barau FC take on Nasarawa United in front of their home fans.

Elsewhere, Ikorodu City host Ranchers Bees as Doma United lock horns with Sporting Lagos in what promises to be a competitive encounter between two ambitious sides eager to make an early impression this season.

The opening round of fixtures comes on the heels of a landmark commercial breakthrough for the league, following the announcement of a historic ₦10.2 billion sponsorship agreement secured by the NPFL under the leadership of Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye.

The deal is expected to further boost the league’s profile and enhance the overall matchday experience for clubs and supporters alike.

With established powerhouses, ambitious newcomers, fierce regional rivalries and renewed optimism surrounding the competition, the 2026/27 NPFL season promises plenty of excitement from the very first whistle.
