Nigerian centre-back Akpe Victory continued his promising start to life in Switzerland after playing the full 90 minutes in FC Basel’s convincing 4-2 home victory over FC Thun in the Swiss Super League on Sunday.
The 19-year-old defender played a key role as Basel secured their second league victory of the season at St. Jakob-Park, with the result providing a much-needed boost following an inconsistent opening to the campaign.
Victory started at the heart of Basel’s defence alongside Flavius Daniliuc in a 4-3-3 formation and completed the entire match.
The young centre-back recorded two interceptions and seven clearances, underlining his defensive contribution throughout the contest.
Basel dominated large portions of the match, with Asane Sow producing an outstanding attacking display by scoring twice and providing two assists.
Zan Celar and substitute Xherdan Shaqiri were also on target for the hosts, while Thun’s goals came through Layton Stewart and Brighton Labeau late in the encounter.
The victory, played in front of more than 24,000 supporters, lifted Basel and offered encouragement to coach Stephan Lichtsteiner as his side looks to build momentum.
Victory’s continued involvement is particularly notable given that he only joined Basel earlier this summer.
The 1.95-metre defender, born in Abuja on July 19, 2006, completed a move from Hungarian club Zalaegerszegi TE in July in a deal reportedly worth around €3 million.
He signed a contract running until 2030, with Basel viewing him as a long-term defensive prospect.
Before moving to Switzerland, Victory developed his reputation during spells with FK Banga Gargždai in Lithuania and Zalaegerszegi in Hungary.
His performances attracted interest from several European clubs, including Rangers, Benfica and Strasbourg, but Basel ultimately won the race for his signature.
The Swiss club’s technical department has highlighted Victory’s physical strength, aerial ability, pace and suitability for defending with a high defensive line as some of his biggest attributes.
Although he remains a developing player, Victory has already featured regularly during the opening weeks of the season and appears to be adapting quickly to the demands of Swiss top-flight football.
There is still room for improvement, particularly in his distribution and decision-making, but his defensive statistics and growing involvement suggest he is making steady progress.
Basel will now hope Victory can maintain his development and continue competing for a regular starting position as the season progresses.
For Nigerian football supporters, the teenager’s early performances at one of Switzerland’s most successful clubs provide another encouraging indication of the country’s emerging defensive talent in European football.
