Rangers Close In on Super Eagles Defender Ryan Alebiosu

Scottish giants Rangers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Nigeria international Ryan Alebiosu, with the defender said to have agreed personal terms ahead of a potential move to Ibrox this summer.

The 24-year-old right-back has emerged as one of Rangers’ priority defensive targets as the club looks to strengthen its squad following a disappointing trophyless campaign that saw rivals Celtic once again dominate Scottish football.

Tavernier Successor Identified

Alebiosu is viewed as a leading candidate to replace long-serving captain James Tavernier, whose departure at the end of the 2025/26 season brought an end to an illustrious 11-year spell at Rangers.

Finding a suitable successor has become a major priority for manager Danny Rohl, and Alebiosu’s profile appears to fit the club’s requirements perfectly.

Known for his athleticism, defensive solidity, and ability to contribute in attacking areas, the Nigerian international has developed into one of the most consistent right-backs in the Championship.

Reports suggest Blackburn Rovers value the defender between £3 million and £5 million, a figure Rangers are believed to be capable of meeting as negotiations progress.

Competition for Signature

Although Rangers are currently considered favourites to secure the player’s services, they are not alone in the race.

Premier League side West Ham United and Serie A outfit Genoa have both been linked with Alebiosu in recent weeks. However, Rangers are understood to have moved ahead of their rivals after reaching an agreement on personal terms with the defender.

A formal offer is expected to follow as the Scottish club looks to finalise the transfer before pre-season preparations intensify.

Familiar Territory

A move to Rangers would not represent a leap into the unknown for Alebiosu.

The London-born defender already has experience of Scottish football following loan spells with Kilmarnock and St Mirren earlier in his career. His most recent stint north of the border came during the 2024/25 season, when he made several appearances for St Mirren and earned praise for his performances.

That familiarity with the Scottish Premiership is seen as a major advantage, reducing the adaptation period that often accompanies new signings.

Standing at 1.88 metres tall, Alebiosu combines physical strength with impressive pace and attacking instincts, making him an ideal fit for the demanding role Rangers expect from their full-backs.

Strong Season at Blackburn

Alebiosu enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Blackburn Rovers during the 2025/26 season.

After joining the Championship club from Belgian side Kortrijk, he quickly established himself as a regular starter, making 39 league appearances and contributing a goal from right-back.

His performances attracted attention from clubs across Europe and further strengthened his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s most promising defenders.

Super Eagles Recognition

The defender’s progress at club level was rewarded with international recognition when he earned his first senior cap for Nigeria during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Alebiosu featured in Nigeria’s victory over Uganda in the group stage and was part of the Super Eagles squad that went on to secure a third-place finish at the tournament.

Since then, he has continued to develop into a player capable of competing at a higher level, and a move to Rangers could provide the perfect platform to further his career.

Deal Edging Closer

With personal terms reportedly agreed and Rangers preparing an official approach, the transfer appears to be gathering momentum.

Blackburn are understood to be open to negotiations should an acceptable offer arrive, while the player himself is believed to be keen on the opportunity to join one of Scotland’s biggest clubs and compete regularly for domestic honours.

If completed, the deal would represent another significant step in Alebiosu’s rise and could prove to be one of Rangers’ most important signings of the summer as they seek to close the gap on Celtic and return to the summit of Scottish football.
