The triumph further highlighted Nigeria’s dominance in women’s athletics, a trend that has continued for years on the continental stage.

However, the same success did not extend to the men’s 4x400m relay team. Zimbabwe claimed gold with a winning time of 3:01.08, ahead of Kenya and Morocco, while Nigeria finished outside the medal positions.

Nigeria’s gold medal haul in Accra was largely powered by the women’s team. World record holder Tobi Amusan opened the country’s gold account with victory in the women’s 100m hurdles, while the women’s 4x100m relay squad made up of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu also raced to gold.

The mixed 4x400m relay team featuring Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Imeh and Patience Okon-George added another impressive gold medal after producing a brilliant performance to overpower their rivals.

With four gold medals secured in Ghana, Nigeria once again demonstrated its strength in women’s track events, even as concerns remain over the men’s performances despite the emergence of Samuel Ogazi, who recently broke Innocent Egbunike’s long-standing national 400m record.

Team officials confirmed that the Nigerian contingent is expected to return home on Monday evening following the conclusion of the championships in Accra.
