Former Nigerian international Bassey Akpan has downplayed fears that the recent fund misappropriation scandal involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) could distract the Super Eagles ahead of their crucial World Cup qualification playoffs.

Speaking with Brila.net, the ex-goalkeeper expressed confidence in the players’ professionalism and determination, emphasizing that representing the nation on the world’s biggest stage remains their top priority.

“I don’t think this NFF scandal involving the misappropriation of funds will be a problem,” Akpan said. “Every Super Eagles player understands the importance of going to work. Playing for your country is the highest level of football.”

Akpan pointed to the team’s commanding performance against Benin Republic as proof of their mental strength and unity, noting that the squad remains driven by the collective goal of returning to the World Cup.

“They showed commitment and focus in that game against Benin Republic,” he added. “If they keep that same spirit, trust me, they will beat Gabon. But it won’t be a walkover, because Gabon also wants it.”

The former shot-stopper urged the team to maintain their intensity and discipline, warning that Gabon’s Panthers will be equally motivated to secure qualification.
