Nigeria received a welcome boost in their build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau visited injured Super Eagles defender Ola Aina in London over the weekend.

The visit was confirmed by the Federation in a statement posted on X on Sunday:

Aina Steps Up Recovery After Surgery

Aina has been out of action since September 9, when he suffered a hamstring tear during Nigeria’s tense 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein. The injury forced him off in discomfort, and subsequent scans confirmed surgery was required.

The setback halted what had been a bright start to the season at Nottingham Forest, under both Ange Postecoglou and later Sean Dyche, with the club losing one of its most dynamic full-backs capable of operating on both flanks.

Recent developments, however, have been positive. The 29-year-old has returned to light, grass-based training, working under the supervision of Forest’s sports science department. Club doctors expect him to edge closer to full fitness between December and early 2026, though any national team involvement will depend strictly on medical sign-off.

Super Eagles Keen for Timely Return

Aina’s absence has been strongly felt by Nigeria. During the CAF World Cup Qualifiers Playoff Final against DR Congo, head coach Eric Chelle was forced to deploy centre-back Benjamin Frederick as an emergency right-back.

With AFCON 2025 kicking off on December 23, the Super Eagles consider Aina’s recovery “crucial,” especially as the team seeks stability after missing out on the 2026 World Cup.

Earlier in the week, Aina himself offered a positive update on Snapchat after a post-operation check-up, writing:

“And it’s clean.”

A message that reassured fans that his recovery remains on track.

Forest Manager Confirms Progress

Ahead of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League clash against Manchester United last weekend, manager Sean Dyche also confirmed Aina’s progress.

“Ola is making good progress… He’s on the grass but not with us; he is with the medical and sports science staff.”

Dyche emphasised that Forest will not rush the defender back as the club battles relegation.

Awoniyi Sidelined Again as Forest Injury List Grows

Dyche also revealed that Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has suffered another setback following recent substitute appearances. The forward is dealing with what the manager described as a “grumbling knee.”

“It’s nothing too serious, but serious enough to stop him from loading in training… We hope we are towards the end of that period.”

Awoniyi has featured in only four league games this season, a significant blow for Forest’s attack.

Key Players for Club and Country

Aina and Awoniyi remain central figures for both Nottingham Forest and the Super Eagles.
Aina has been one of Forest’s most consistent defenders since joining from Torino, while Awoniyi’s 10 league goals last season were instrumental in keeping the club in the Premier League.

Their availability in the coming months could shape Forest’s relegation battle and play a defining role in Nigeria’s ambitions for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
