Team Nasarawa has made an impressive entry at the 9th National Youth Games, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. The state’s delegation made a vibrant statement during the opening ceremony on Friday, August 29, with an energetic march past that captivated thousands of spectators. The games were officially declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by his Aide on Information and Public Communications, Hon. Sunday Dare.
The team has wasted no time in making its mark, already securing a total of three bronze medals. All three medals came from the Karate event. Magdalene Inji was the first to medal, winning a bronze in the girls’ minus 47kg category. Alexander Otuma followed suit, also earning a bronze in the boys’ minus 50kg. On Saturday, Chineye Agbo added to the medal tally with a bronze in the girls’ plus 47kg Karate Kumite category, triumphing over her opponent from the FCT.
Beyond the martial arts arena, Team Nasarawa’s football squad delivered a significant upset by defeating the host team, Delta, with a lone goal from Miracle Oshala. This victory at the Saint Patrick’s Football Pitch on Saturday continues their strong run from the Zonal Eliminations. The football team is scheduled to play Team Yobe on Sunday, August 31, and will conclude their group stage matches on Monday, September 1, aiming to advance to the knockout phase.
The 278-member Nasarawa State contingent, which departed Lafia on Tuesday, August 26, is competing in 22 sporting events. The delegation includes athletes, sports secretaries, referees, and various officials. With over 6,000 athletes and coaches participating, the two-week-long event is expected to be a showcase of young talent. Team Nasarawa is optimistic about improving their medal count as the competition progresses towards its climax on September 7, 2025.
