As the stakes rise at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), new Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has flown into Cairo, Egypt, to personally assess Nigeria’s Flying Eagles as they prepare for their crucial final group match against Kenya’s Rising Stars.
Chelle’s visit underscores the strategic importance of the U-20 squad, long considered the breeding ground for future senior internationals. His arrival, slated for today, May 5, is aimed at finalising scouting assessments ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup in London, a four-nation mini-tournament taking place from May 27 to 31. Nigeria is set to face familiar West African rivals Ghana, along with Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
Nigeria’s U-20 side, led by coach Aliyu Zubairu, has had a solid but cautious start to their AFCON campaign. A 1-0 victory over Tunisia in their opener was followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against a technically disciplined Morocco side.
With four points from two games, the Flying Eagles currently sit second in Group B, level with Morocco but trailing due to goal difference. Their final group-stage test comes on Wednesday, May 7, against a Kenyan team yet to register a point in the competition.
A win would secure Nigeria’s passage to the quarter-finals, while a dominant win by three or more goals could even see them top the group a potentially crucial advantage in determining a more favorable knockout opponent.
Eric Chelle’s Egypt trip is not just symbolic, it’s strategic. The former Mali boss, who took over the Super Eagles reins following the departure of José Peseiro, is keen to integrate promising talent into his squad for upcoming assignments.
Historically, the U-20 side has served as a springboard for Super Eagles stars. Icons like John Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, Victor Osimhen, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Samuel Chukwueze all emerged from youth setups to become senior mainstays.
In this edition of the tournament, a few players have already begun to stand out. Midfielder Auwal Ibrahim and captain/defender Daniel Bameyi have each claimed the Man of the Match award in Nigeria’s opening two games, catching the eye with their composure and leadership.
With less than a month to go before Nigeria kicks off its Unity Cup campaign in London, Chelle is using this opportunity to gauge readiness and raw talent. His provisional list for the tournament is expected soon after the group stage concludes in Egypt.
The Unity Cup will be followed by a high-profile international friendly against Russia in June — part of a busy calendar as Chelle looks to rebuild and redefine Nigeria’s national team in his image.
Chelle’s trip is a reminder of the symbiotic relationship between Nigeria’s youth and senior setups. As the Flying Eagles aim to end their 10-year wait for another U-20 AFCON title, the presence of the Super Eagles coach could provide both inspiration and opportunity.
For young stars dreaming of Wembley or the World Cup stage, Wednesday’s clash with Kenya might be more than just a group-stage fixture it could be the launchpad to greatness.
