Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has rallied Nigerians to stand firmly behind the team as they prepare for their all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal clash against Gabon in Morocco.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s encounter in Rabat, the Al-Kholood defender acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but maintained that confidence within the camp is growing.

“I think we’ve been under pressure from the start. How we started these qualifiers that’s the reality,” Ekong said.

“The boys are now learning to cope with that pressure. It’s been an exercise for us over the last few months. It’s not been easy.”

Despite off-field challenges, including the ongoing dispute with the NFF over unpaid bonuses, the skipper pointed out positives in the team’s recent performances, particularly in attack.

“We have amazing players. Everyone is really working, and we’re going to get better.”

Ekong emphasized the importance of unity between the players, media, and fans to push the team toward qualification.

“We just need everyone else to also believe in us now. We’re already believing in each other,” he declared.

“If we have the power and support from the media and the fans, you’re going to see some more special things from this team.”

The 2023 AFCON MVP believes Nigeria has the quality to overcome Gabon and progress to the playoff final.

Historically, the Super Eagles have fared well against the Panthers, winning three, drawing one, and losing once in their last five competitive meetings. Their most recent encounter came during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, where Nigeria won at home and drew away.
