Nigeria’s goalkeeping battle has taken another turn after Arthur Okonkwo was included in the Super Eagles squad for the opening fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper received his latest international call-up ahead of Nigeria’s September matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, giving head coach Eric Chelle another option as he prepares for the qualifiers.
Okonkwo’s inclusion adds further competition to a position that has already generated plenty of debate among Nigerian football fans.
The former Arsenal academy goalkeeper is expected to compete with Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye for the starting spot, although Okoye’s recent injury situation could have an impact on Chelle’s options.
Okonkwo is not new to the Super Eagles setup.
After completing his international switch from England to Nigeria, he received his first senior call-up earlier in 2026 and made his debut during the Unity Cup.
The goalkeeper started Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe before keeping another clean sheet in the 3-0 final victory over Jamaica. Those two appearances remain his only senior caps for Nigeria.
He was also part of the squad for Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal but did not feature in either match.
The latest call-up could therefore give Okonkwo his first opportunity to make a competitive appearance for the Super Eagles.
Okonkwo has also been getting regular football at club level.
The goalkeeper joined Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Wrexham and has started the club’s first four Championship matches of the campaign.
His early performances include a particularly impressive display in Charlton’s 2-1 victory away to West Ham, when he made eight saves from nine shots on target.
He also kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 home victory over Preston North End.
Overall, Okonkwo has made four Championship appearances this season, conceding six goals and recording 15 saves from 21 shots on target, according to FBref.
The recent run of regular football is important for the goalkeeper as he looks to strengthen his claim for a more prominent role with Nigeria.
The call-up gives Chelle another selection headache in an area where Nigeria already has several options.
Stanley Nwabali remains an established figure in the Super Eagles setup, while Maduka Okoye has also been competing for the position.
Okonkwo’s arrival has now made the contest even more interesting, particularly because he brings regular Championship football and previous clean-sheet performances with the national team.
His situation is also helped by his international eligibility. FIFA approved his switch of sporting nationality from England to Nigeria in April 2026, allowing him to represent the Super Eagles in competitive fixtures.
The Super Eagles will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign at home against Madagascar before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania.
The first fixture against Madagascar is scheduled for September 23 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, while the Guinea-Bissau encounter is scheduled for September 27 in Morocco.
The group presents an unusual qualification situation because Tanzania is one of the tournament’s co-hosts and already has automatic qualification.
That means Nigeria will need to finish as the highest-ranked team among the other sides in Group L to secure their place at the 2027 tournament.
For Okonkwo, the September camp represents more than another international call-up.
It is an opportunity to show Chelle that he can handle competitive international football and challenge for the starting position.
His two previous appearances ended in clean sheets, while his current run of club football means he enters the camp with regular competitive action behind him.
Whether Chelle trusts him to start against Madagascar remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: the competition for the Super Eagles goalkeeper position has become significantly more intense.
With Nwabali, Okoye and Okonkwo all fighting for the shirt, Chelle now has a major decision to make before Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign gets underway.
