Veteran Nigeria defender Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year career with the Super Falcons.
The 33-year-old centre-back made the announcement following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, describing the decision to step away from the national team as one of the most difficult choices of her career.
Ohale shared the news in an emotional statement on Instagram, reflecting on the journey that saw her wear the Nigerian jersey for more than a decade and a half.
“There are moments in life when words are simply not enough. Today is one of those moments,” Ohale wrote.
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football.”
Her decision closes a significant chapter in the history of the Super Falcons. Ohale represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and featured in seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations competitions.
She was also part of several successful Falcons generations and helped Nigeria claim five WAFCON titles during her international career.
Despite the disappointment surrounding her retirement, Ohale said she leaves the national team without regrets, choosing instead to focus on gratitude for the people who shared the journey with her.
She thanked her teammates, coaches, technical staff, family, friends and the Nigeria Football Federation for their support throughout her career.
She also reserved special appreciation for Nigerian football fans, whose support she said made representing the country even more meaningful.
“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special.”
For Ohale, however, the greatest reward was not necessarily the trophies or appearances, but the opportunity to serve her country.
She described representing Nigeria as a privilege and made it clear that retirement would not erase the emotional connection she has with the Super Falcons.
“The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart,” she concluded.
