Nigeria international Chidera Ejuke’s proposed move from Sevilla to Belgian giants Anderlecht has hit a major stumbling block, with the two parties yet to agree on the winger’s salary.
According to reports, negotiations remain ongoing, but Ejuke’s wage demands have emerged as the biggest obstacle preventing the transfer from being completed.
The 28-year-old has just one year remaining on his Sevilla contract, which expires in June 2027, and the Spanish club have already made it clear that he is free to leave this summer.
Sevilla are not planning to offer the Super Eagles winger a contract extension and have excluded him from their pre-season training tour and recent matchday squads as they look to facilitate his departure.
Having signed Ejuke on a free transfer in 2024, the La Liga club are hoping to generate a transfer fee while reducing their wage bill ahead of the new season.
Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht have emerged as the frontrunners for the Nigerian’s signature after identifying him as an experienced attacking reinforcement. The Brussels-based club are familiar with Ejuke’s qualities following his impressive loan spell at rivals Royal Antwerp during the 2023/24 season.
Reports suggest Anderlecht are preparing an offer worth between €3.5 million and €4 million, a valuation Sevilla are believed to be willing to accept.
However, personal terms remain a significant hurdle.
Ejuke is reportedly earning between €1.8 million and €1.9 million per season in Spain, a salary Anderlecht consider too high for their current wage structure. The Belgian club are pushing for a reduced financial package, but no agreement has been reached.
The salary dispute has left the transfer in limbo despite continued discussions between all parties.
Ejuke’s spell at Sevilla has failed to meet expectations. Across two seasons, the Nigerian has managed three goals and two assists in more than 50 appearances, including just one goal and one assist in 27 La Liga matches last season.
Although flashes of his trademark pace, dribbling ability, and direct attacking style have been evident, the former CSKA Moscow winger struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
A return to Belgium could provide the fresh start he needs. During his time at Royal Antwerp, Ejuke rediscovered his best form and produced several impressive performances, making the Belgian Pro League a familiar environment where he could revive his career.
While Anderlecht remain interested, Sevilla are also aware that clubs from Saudi Arabia could offer a more attractive financial package, both in terms of transfer fee and wages. Interest has also been reported from clubs in England, Turkey, and other European leagues.
With the summer transfer window still open, Ejuke’s future remains uncertain. Whether Anderlecht can find a compromise on his salary or another club steps in with a more lucrative proposal will determine where the Super Eagles winger plays his football next season.
